Required RDG coming to UPS
#91
As the guy 170 from the bottom, I wouldn't. As a guy who is familiar with what it's like outside the golden halls of UPS - and hates posturing - I still wouldn't. I think a lot of the bottom 400 are a lot more in touch with the real world "outside" than the top 2000, and wouldn't support a mandatory action.
If the union put an RDG to a membership vote, I would vote for it. I think most of those on the chopping block would vote yes also. You can call it socialism, or whatever. I call it self preservation. There was a reason that 99% of the bottom 300 participated in the MOU.
I believe I am in a better position than most, in the event of a furlough. I have the reserves, and a wife who works, and no kids. I live out of my van.
Seriously, though, a furlough now would be much worse than after 9/11, or those in the early 90's. Look at the economy, the job market, the credit market, the housing market, etc. I can imagine that if 300-400 were furloughed for 4-5 years, it would lead to lots of foreclosures, divorces, bankruptcies, etc.
I am a long time union guy, and believe that there are times to take off the gloves and duke it out. I also believe that UPS will use every opportunity to help themselves at the IPA's expense. However, given the current situation, I would vote for a measure to save jobs.
Those not at risk of furlough may vote against it, and I might think it selfish. Ultimately people will do what is best for them, and I do understand that. Hopefully the union leadership will do a good job (like with the MOU, in my opinion) and we can move forward.
