Purple or Brown?????

Both are REALLY GOOD COMPANIES and careers. You'd be foolish not to apply to both of them, maybe you'll be fortunate enough to have to pick between them?
Good luck, lots of us have been furloughed over the years and recovered.

I'd choose Brown.
When hiring starts again it will be more robust and career progression will be better at Brown. They have a very optimized schedule already, so I'm told. At purple, the 3 to 2 man conversion continues and the coming 777 will also improve pilot scheduling efficiency. It may not replace the MD11, but it will most certainly put a dent in their schedules. We still have crewmembers from the DC-10 sitting on their couches at home waiting for training. Not to mention the steady optimization of all airplane schedules.
I'm betting the Brown part time schedules don't save as much $$ as the lower line averages at Purple. But it probably doesn't need to either.

From what I've heard about Purple and what I've experienced a Brown:
Work environment: Purple wins.
$$$$: Brown wins.
Its close in both regards but if you needed a line to choose between here it is. You'll earn a little more at Brown but going to work will be a little less painful at Purple.

Either company would be great, but personally I just don't look good in brown. Come to think of it, no one looks good in a brown uniform.

Jetjok: After 20 years at Brown, I would have to say that I agree completely with your assessment, through and including the uniforms. Not complaining, but if I had to do it over again and had the option, I'd go Purple, for sure.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but what I get from your quote above is that if one is only interested in MONEY, then go with UPS. However, if one is actually interested in being treated like a human being, and not badgered and second-guessed at every turn, while at work, then go with FedEx. As someone whose worked at both, I'd agree with your work environment statement. Since I've not followed your payscales, I can't really speak about the bucks. However, I will say that because FedEx moves much more quickly in many regards (while UPS moves much more slowly), when hiring starts, movement at FedEx could be rather good, especially if the global economy does a giddy-up.

We are in 4a2b and the optimizer is running wild. Scheduling and management have been altering the work environment a great deal for the average line pilot. I think our management wants to be more like Brown management and wouldn't be surprised if they look alike in the near future.
How on earth do you predict movement will be better at Purple than at Brown? No more postal contracts to acquire. We're doing as many MD11 military charters as we can get. Domestic freight has been moving to ground for a couple of years and continues to do so. I get tired of everyone glossing over the effect on hiring that 3 to 2 man cockpit conversion causes. Ask your Brown friends about that, they know. Expect that to accelerate for the next 2-3 years.
The best I can say is you are living in the past. You haven't been flying here in some time. We are in the middle of a big excess that shows no sign of abating and will continue thru mid 2010.
Glad your time at Purple was so good but to assume it will bounce back to the glory days of gangbuster hiring is not realistic.
