I got the letter too. I didn't explain anything, I just checked off the box that said I lived in another state and sent it back. I guess I'll see if that's enough.

My friend bids reserve (not ups) so he spends lots of time in Калифорния and he ended up having to show them credit card receipts, etc. to prove he was outside of the Red State most of the time... He got the letter some 4 months ago and it was regarding year 2007 but he thinks they’ll end up looking into his 2008 tax returns too and maybe even prior to 2007…

I'm now adopting the Montana Freemen tactics where I try to pay cash for everything while shopping in Pelosistan… Not sure if it'll help but I'm sure IRS storm troopers will eventually catch up with me too...

This is nothing new for California, went through this sixteen years ago. It took a couple of years for them to understand I had taken my income and left the state.

Default Personal Property Tax, Virgina, & Crashpad

In a "somewhat" related matter the Leesburg, Virgina police department would drive around apartment buildings in the middle of the night writing down the license plates of out of state tags.

I lived in Michigan while based in Dulles with Indy and happened to occassionally have a crashpad car with MI plates there. I tried to fight the "personal property tax" and subsequently my wages were garnished without notification. Well, the chief pilot called me in after the wages were being garnished to find out why. Never got that money back.

CA garnished my wages without any notice over car registration a year after leaving the state. Took months to clear up. You have to 'De-register" your car there when you leave or they still want "their money". So much for just fining someone for driving with expired tags.

I received the "letter" two separate tax years. Call the tax CA franchise board and find out the address to send your letter explaining your situation. Have your flight specialist or manager write them a letter on company letterhead explaining that you are administratively based in CA but do not generate income there and that you live in whatever state and are a resident there. It was a major pain and both times took up hours of my free time trying to resolve. They get very threatening to you. Nobody answers the phone until you spend a hour on hold and when they do they don't want to hear your sob story. Good luck!

During this time the DC sniper was out plugging people. So of course I went down to the Leesburg city hall--incidentally one of the nicest I've seen (of course I grew up in Detroit) and asked, "Don't the cops have anything better to do than ticket out of state cars at 3:18am?"--the time on the personal property tax citation. To which she replied, we have specialized police officers who do only that. Ok, so you hire cops to generate the revenue to pay the cops that generate the revenue.

Fortunately my wife, who as a result of experience began to sense a Sam Kinison/denis leary style rant about to emerge from this behavioral psychology major intervened and extracted me from the situation and a stay at I'm sure one of the nicest holding cells in the country.
