"Suck one disputed pairing and that makes you something for life?"

If a new guy, no of course not. Response should be educate, inform, support and hope it alters behavior.

If an experienced employee or repeat offender, different story and that is the case we were presented when this thread began. The guys who some here believe should be given a break because they "made a mistake" and "feel awful about it" are experienced employees, they've been on the property for a long enough time to know better.

I've been around life for long enough to know better about a lot of things, like take my wallet with me when I leave the layover hotel; remember my company ID when I leave home for my commute; etc, etc. But sometimes I still eff it up. Sometimes the more experience and familiarity you have with something the easier it is to buffoon it.
Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid. Life is harder for me so I give a belated 'thanks' to those who have aided me in my past knuckle-headed situations and an advance gratefulness to those who may help me out in the future.

Well said. No excuse and this guy deserves to get some $#!@ about it but let's not start a lynch mob. "He that is without sin cast the first stone." I talked to him and he said he screwed up, I believe him because he is telling the truth. If he has to fly it, make him buy you a beer.

I was concerned that I would suffer some real peer pressure, something significant that if it didn't keep me in line, it at least would remind me that each month before I jockey my schedule around that I had better have the DP list out next to my computer so that I wouldn't make a mistake and pick one up. But now I see the "penalty" for operating a DP is just that I'll have to buy a beer provided I say that I feel bad about it and that I'm sorry. Okay, wow, that sure relieves the doubt and concern I had. Guess I can stop writing the DP pairing numbers down in my union-provided calendar each month since no one really seems to care, provided I say I'm sorry and it was just a mistake.

This subject has been beaten to death and I think we can all agree that the DP process is broken. However, that does not excuse or provide relief for those that pick up a disputed pairing.

That being said lets not loose site that we all make mistakes from time to time...even those among us who claim differently!

Talk to the offending parties, cajole, prod and push if needed. But don't forget that in the end honest mistakes are made. Lets not toss aside a brother or sister whom we're going to need down the road.
