There's a lot of desire to do something. I just don't know what that something is.
Just went to the FAA website and there's no info on any proposed rules regarding rest out there.
When the rules are open for comment, I definitely plan on making my opinion known in hopes of preventing intrusive and/or idiotic rule from becoming part of the FARs.
But, would certainly be better if the rest period started at the hotel versus the airport. Or, if it didn't include transportation of a local nature---eg the 45 min van ride to/from shouldn't be part of a "legal" rest period.
Civilian world used to have work rules to overcome the shortcomings of the FARs-but, they went away in BK when judges re-wrote contracts. Would be nice for the bros if some of those rules became FARs.

but then wrote;

I think you just contradicted yourself. I agree with you that the 45 minute van ride should not be considered as part of a rest period. However, insisting that the van ride not count towards rest while a jumpseat ride does count as rest is a double standard that will not withstand even the slightest amount of cross examination.

If the rules say I can operate from SAT to MEM sit around for 4 hour to operate back to SAT I am sure I will be able to jumpseat from Sat to MEM and operate back. For me, much ado about nothing.
It is nice of ALPA to tell us that they are in the process, unfortunately they don't think it is important to tell us what they are fighting for. I am sure they are fighting the good fight; after all change is the only thing that matters.
