What's happened to the DC8 over 65 FEs?

We don't know that as a fact at all. Somewhere between zero and 140,000,000 was a number that the company wanted. We came up with 90 and they took it. they'll be back for more in november with the threat being 2010 furloughs. At this point I say call their bluff. I've given more than I should have in the first place. When they start axing managers we'll talk. I just found out that they ar replacing IPA 767 FBS instructors with management guys...DC8 PFE's that have never flown an airplane!!!! I throw the BS flag!!!!! Toss those guys to the curb. they had their career and there is no more work for them here
What a crock !

It's actually pretty typical (hypocritical) airline pilot speak. On the one hand, he's a conservative, anti-socialist, free-market economist... until someone threatens his pay. Then it's Katie bar the door, get the union on the horn... I think it's pretty clear there is NO WAY we'd have the contract (read: pay, benefits, work rules) we have now without the union.
WRT the UAW (and I'm NOT saying they are entirely blameless) but the Fox-news rants about the reason auto companies are bailed out is to support lazy, overpaid union guys to sit around and do nothing or (even worse) pay them in retirement when they're not contributing at all is EXTREMELY one-sided. Those union auto workers have NO SAY in what cars to design, build and market. They come to work and stand next to Rosie with the rivet gun and work off the blueprints they're given. Then, when it turns out GM can't sell their cars (at any price) because people would rather buy a Honda since it lasts 100,000 miles longer (it's DESIGNED that way), it's somehow the union's fault. Meanwhile, all the geniuses who came up with these crackpot cars (management) leave with $50mil golden parachutes while UAW retirees lose half their pay. Nice.
Look back 20 yrs when congress first started talking about raising mpg requirements on cars: GM/Chrysler/Ford sunk a gazillion $$$ into lobbyists because they said "it can't be done." Japan sunk that money into R&D and built cars with the higher mpg and hey, those seem to be the cars consumers want to buy.
For the record, the "he" I was referening to in para one is a general airline pilot, not Lil J. I don't know him and have no idea what his economic beliefs are and don't intend to spend 3 posts back and forth explaining that if he flips his wig reading this.

Another Americans want yugos post.

Don't worry Barry and Nancy will make sure you get the "right" car whether you want it or not. Value determines car sales, it is hard for American cars to compete when they have 30% higher labor costs. Think that will change anytime soon?

Not another penny from this bottom 300 hostage. Tapped out. Call their bluff and make them send out the pink slips. I thought that the current EB was going to do something about the manglers. Either organize them or prove they really are manglers and aren't entitled to fly our stuff. Election issue #1 for me. Solving the manager issue equals more flying for us no matter how you cut it. Thoughts?

oYou betcha I bid reserve and enjoy not "working". That's what makes living in God forsaken Ky worth it. It's not even close to the same thing as the UAW job banks.
Our union has pulled a fast one. Rather than everyone risk a small paycut by calling the furlough bluff, we have the most junior guys taking a huge paycut. It's an unfair situation. Either this job is worth having or it's not. Guys should not feel obligated to work for half pay. It was wrong for folks to pressure others into the "voluntary" measures. Our union condoned this if not orchestrated it.

Uhhhh....with little due respect....
The whole MOU is voluntary. You don't wanna do it, don't do it. I'm a senior guy taking the next two months off. I see it as a QOL improvement and a major concession from UPS and contract 2006. They just allowed me to take a couple of months off without pay for personal reasons. That wasn't in contract 2006 and I quite think the IPA would have had to give something big away to secure such a great QOL deal back in 2006. I just got it for nothing thanks to the MOU...
There is always the 5%er's that will be unhappy with everything. Welcome to that club. Personally, I got no respect for it, but whatever floats yer boat. I'm a happy UPS pilot, a happy IPA volunteer, and a happy no bidder on 09-05.
See ya....
