He'll be back to Memphis in a few years talking about how great Memphis is and how commuting sucks. I'm happy spending max time with my family, and that is being close to the job. A lot of guys don't want to be home, and I figure they commute. It's worth the extra time away and pay loss to be on the road. It doesn't add up to me, but hey if they are happy ... good for them.

It's so typical of a FedEx guy to justify living in MEM by saying that he gets to spend more time with his family or it makes his life easier at work, blah blah blah.

The real question he should be asking himself is...Would his family be better off and enjoy life more, living somewhere other than Memphis? And, would he be willing to make the sacrifice of commuting, for them?

Of course, like my "signature" below the line says:

Busboy,

It is strange having to justify living in Memphis. It isn't for everybody, that's for sure. I actually like it here. We live in the suburbs and have very little crime. I didn't know the stats until they were posted here recently, but I knew I didn't fear for my life when I leave the house. It is suburban living, and like Boycaptain said, it is pretty boring. I happen to like the life. We have good friends and I get to spend much more time at home. If you want great nightlife it isn't the place for you. Downtown and midtown have more going on, but more crime as well.

I have commuted. I wasn't home near as much and when I got home I was usually exhausted. I am home for practically every event in my kids life, even ones that most people would consider unimportant. I don't miss soccer games and school activities and that is what is important to me. I don't ***** myself out and work everyday. I prefer not to be called for draft. If I didn't have kids or a family I wanted to see, I would probably live somewhere else.

I am not trying to get any of you to change your mind, but this thread started with someone wanting Memphis information. There are some of us that like it very much and others that hate it. It's great that we have a choice to live where we want.

I live in Collierville. I would be happy to commute if it was best for my wife and daughter. We've lived here almost 4 years but after the first six months my wife and daughter would refuse to move if it ever came up.

(Wife was born in CO and grew up in AZ, nice places BTW. All family and child hood friends in AZ).

My daughter loves her PUBLIC school and is thriving there (going into 7th).
She LOVES her soccer team and enjoys the movies with her group of good kids. Pretty much the same she'd be doing anywhere.

We recognize the Memphis crime issues and use due diligence but don't live in constant fear. We occasionally forget to lock the doors or close the garage door but haven't had any problems. One car was broken into but that was in an area known for such activities. There was no damage and all the items stolen items were recovered from a nearby trash can except 3 credit cards. The only one they tried to use was my corporate card so that was very easy to fix.

No matter where you live life is what you choose to make it.

p.s. that's not my car in the avatar so don't bother trying to break in to it--notice the NY tag

Bottom line for most kids, they don't care where they live. As long as it's a safe and nurturing environment, they are happy. When Daddy is gone all the time or even an extra four days a month trying to commute, they tend not to be as happy. IMHO.
Only one thing is certain, this argument will never be solved. If you enjoy spending extra days a month away from the "Old Ball and Chain", good for you. Commute. I prefer living in MEM where my family doesn't mind me being away from home a couple hours, several days a week.
Yes, I think my family is better off.

Of course, like my "signature" below the line says:
The answer is NO!

Maybe your family is better off with you away more. Mine is not. I commuted for 12 years and I know the difference. Unlike your signature "it's all about my family" for me. My kids cry and complain every time I go to work. There is no place on earth they'd rather live that took me away even one extra day a year. BTW my wife and kids love it here, there is no sacrifice for us living here (other than the grandparents are further away).

To each his own and we may move some day .... just no day soon.
