Wow,
Not involved in the solutions? We've been living in the planet for 8 years and ARE involved in the community. I had to stop my wife's involvement at one of the inner city schools after a few too many shootings (since she's not allowed to pack in a school). Plenty of us are involved and trying to fight the tide of criminality. It's still a craphole.
Hey, eyes wide open. Living and flying out of Memphis is great. Get an apartment and have a blast. But Mr. Good Beer is dreaming. I've also lived all over the country and NEVER seen such a ****hole.
I find the "whitey-tighty burbs" and "scared of black people" crack pretty offensive. The only race involved is the race out of inner city Memphis.
Memphis is one of the most dangerous cities in the country - for black AND white people. A few months ago I walked 5 miles through NYC by myself, half of it at night, with out a single problem. Try that in mid-town Memphis. I personally know people who have been robbed at gunpoint and shot and left for dead.

As far as the walking 5 miles through Midtown, yeah been there done that do it most days (well maybe not 5 miles every day), you just need to know where you should go or not go...just like in any other major metropolitan area.
As far as crime in the Inner city, the core has actually emptied out since the major projects have been torn down.....American Murder Mystery - The Atlantic (July/August 2008)
Once again, not the best place, but far from the worst..

Good on you for the involvement, I was painting with to broad a brush. I just get sick of hearing nothing but negativity from people who don't live here (in the city). Sorry you are offended by the pun, but saying that Race has nothing to do with distribution of population in the area is in my opinion not very realistic...where you offended by the earlier post about cops scaring kids out of OB or the "hood" car being chased out?

Newark - 853
2007 Property Crime (burglary, larceny, car theft, arson) statistics- per 100,000 residents
Rockford, Ill. - 12,055
St. Louis - 9736
Memphis - 8062
Atlanta - 7286
New York - 1819
L.A. - 2621
Newark - 3806
Memphis ranked third in murders, and third in property crimes for major cities in the U.S. in 2007. It's not at the top, but to say "not the best place, but far from the worst.." is not accurate. It is very close to being the worst statistically. To each his own, and we shouldn't paint the whole city with a broad brush as you say, but you or one of your family members are statistically three times as likely to be murdered or be the victim of a property crime in Memphis, as you would be if you lived in either New York or Los Angeles.
Anyone who moves into Memphis proper should be aware of these statistics, and make any decision on where to live with their eyes wide open.

Good Beer, sorry, I have to disagree with your last point. Here's a sample of the 2007 FBI Uniform Crime Statistics (the last year data has been published as far as I can find).

MEMPHIS, TN - Fireworks and bullets lit up the night sky on Beale Street during the 4th of July weekend.
Memphis Police tell myEyewitnessNews.com that just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday, someone opened fire on a large group of people gathered outside The Plush Club at 380 Beale.
Five people, all juveniles, were hit. Three of them were taken to the hospital. An MPD spokesperson says two are in non-critical condition. The third was treated and released.
Investigators believe the other two kids were hit by bullet fragments and had only minor injuries.
There is no description of the accused gunman and police have not released a motive for the shooting.

When people have their mind made up, they don't want to confuse it with facts.
I wonder what % of murders go unreported in South Central LA or Spanish Harlem in NYC? The police hardly go to those areas!

You're right! And if we had a pilot domicile in those areas, I wouldn't live there either.
