We moved here 3 years ago and looked all over Germantown, and Collierville, then we drove down to Olive Branch and bought there. The neighborhood is great and my wife loves it. You'll save about 200K and get a bigger lot. The strange thing about it, we don't have any of the porblems that most places in Memphis have and I'm 13 miles from the parking lot (closer than Collierville). We moved here from the DFW area and the folks in the shops and restaruants in Olive Branch look like the same folks in Dallas. The guy behind me owned the local Sonic and he said he couldn't get kids from Memphis to work in MS that they were scared of the police in MS.. and he said "for good reason"
My wife and a neighbor saw a Memphis "hood" car drive in the subdivision and 5 minutes later a cop came in too. 10 min later the cop was following the car out. If you move give Olive Branch a look.
I have rental property in Midtown and stayed in crashpads out east for 10 years. Olive Branch is worth a look and there are great deals in the area.
All that being said if you don't have kids Midtown or downtown.
Don't listen to all the sour grapes we love it. I guess some people want their wives and kids to live in a particular place, but then you spend more time away from your family. I'm happy where my kids are, commuting cost me time with my kids and no place on earth is worth that to me. It is what you make it.
Good luck

I lived in Collierville for 3 yrs and then moved to Fayette Co. for 3 years before finally getting a gut full and moving away. Aside from the obvious jokes about the crime (ok, maybe not jokes...MEM is #2 in the US in violent crime), it depends on your situation. If you have school age kids, don't get sucked into the MEM city system unless you plan on private schools. Shelby Co schools are better, but WAY overpopulated. Collierville HS has so many kids the halls are one way...too many kids during class change to be able to go in both directions. And they can't build the schools they need because the Shelby Co debt load is over ONE BILLION DOLLARS. Bigger than some countries. Oh, and 70 cents of every dollar you pay in Shelby Co taxes earmarked for schools goes to Memphis CITY schools which are an ongoing sucking chest wound. And don't be surprised if the city (MEM) and county gov'ts consolidate at some point in the near future. Who knows what that will mean, but probably a negative for the county school system. Getting rid of the current mayor may help, but the buffoonery of that city gov't is widespread and well documented. We liked Fayette Co...property taxes are one third of Collierville, but again, probably talking private schools. And its a drive to the airport (50 minutes or so one way from our house, but you can get much closer in).
My advice is to study up before you move here, or do a trial run by yourself for awhile. You can end up in an area that looks good, but has issues that aren't obvious (i.e. Cordova).
Good Luck...I've found I'd rather commute than live there, even with the time away from home. But every situation is different.

i have a crashpad in Southaven and its nice where i am at. I've been in Memphis for the last year and a half and its not to bad if you find a decent area. With that said I wouldnt move there.
when I first started at NWA i had a different crashpad a couple miles from Graceland and it was bad enough that i bought an home defense shotgun just for my crashpad

MEM is really bad in some areas and i was stunned after watching the local news when i first got there. Murder after shooting after robbery, etc. oh and corruption is supposedly bad too LOL
As far as a base though, you cant beat it (flying wise). Great people and its laid back.
