Speaking of tipping the cab/van/limo driver....I've always looked at it as a way of both showing my appreciation for their getting me someplace safely, in a timely manner, as well as for reinforcing their desire to carry flight crews in the future, because we do tip. For guys like Dougdrvr talked about, I personally find them embarrassing and when I flew with those types of guys, would usually double my tip to make up for their lack of one. I guess they not only don't care what others think of them, but they also are shortsighted in that over time their reputation will become known to all.

Finished a flight into South Bend in December and it was snowing and bitterly cold. Our crew van pulled up to the hotel. The van driver, who was a small, older woman and looked so tired and ill did her best to lift our bags out of the van. Each of our bags practically weighed half as much as she did. The captain was holding a five dollar bill but said to her..."Wait right here while I go inside and get change." Meanwhile the poor woman froze her ass off outside waiting by the van. The CA came out and paid her three dollars and left. It was embarrassing. He just couldn't give her $5. During the flight the CA told me he was making 200K a year.

That's a good way to look at it.

In the fall of 1993, I flew Dash-8's for Atlantic Coast Airlines.
We arrived [typically 1 hour late] at Norfolk, Virginia's airport. We went to get into the crew van; there was a Delta crew going to their hotel at the same time. The Delta "captain" instructed the van driver to remove our bags from the van, and made SURE that we did not ride in it to the hotel.
We took a van 15 minutes later. My Captain called ALPA about it, but got the run around.
-Subsequently, I have jumpseated across the Atlantic Ocean dozens of times on Delta to my significant other at the time, and I have always been treated like royalty!
That removal of bags: That was out of line-
That guy, that captain? He's an *******.

I have also started to give $2 because what's really a $1 anymore especially in California? I felt like a cheapskate just giving a $1.

We have it in our contracts; but most contractors just blow it off.

If they want their own van then they can wait!! NO Delta Captain will make me get out of the crew van, I cannot believe some people.

A few years back I realized that I was still tipping my 1981 tip even though I now made more than ten times that amount of money, so I upped my tips. I do question what was written about "as well as for reinforcing their desire to carry flight crews in the future, because we do tip.". Who care what their desire is, it's their job.
Also, if you've ever been on a short layover and made several laps around the airport or waited to pick up someone else, you can see the genesis of the "only us in a van" routine.

As I said Fred usually contracts for one van per crew when they work the hotel contract. Some contractors comply, some don't. I would never want anyone left stranded but I have been in situations where we are waiting 30 minutes for another crew or while swinging by the PAX termonal to pick up someone. Not the most pleasant activity after 12 hours of night hub turn fun and games.
I don't agree with the Delta Captain kicking off another crew, but there are reasons for the one van one crew concept.
