I thought about putting a third option (reduced furlough) on the original poll, but did not for exactly the argument Buck92 makes. I think the terms of furlough protection (like the duration) are negotiable, but ultimately it will be either furlough 300 or none at all (at least for now).

Lets just say that they do let all 300 go in september. That would only save them 18 million for 2009. Through the MOU we came up with more than that for 2009.

Now for 2010 assume that UPS would save 54 million with 300 on the street for the full year. We probably came up with 40 million MOU dollars for 2010.

I estimate the combined 2009 and 2010 dollars from the MOU to be around 70 million bucks. If UPS could furlough all 300 in september (which they cant) they would save 72 million in payroll by the end of 2010. When you factor in training costs of a furlough the real savings number is probably significantly less than that.

Through the MOU we gave them 70 million by the end of 2010.

UPS would be insane not to take that deal.
Excellent logic. Agreed.

Although none of us knows for sure until Friday, I heard that the 2010 IPA contributions are 101% of the goal.

My guess is that the 2009 contributions are 75% of the goal.

So, even if the company tried to furlough a "prorated" number of pilots, which I don't believe they can IAW with an accepted MOU, that would mean they would furlough 25% of 300 (75 pilots on the street). I think the company would be crazy to take the MOU savings, then infuriate, for generations, 2000 pilots by sending 75 guys to the street.

My guess is that they'll take the MOU savings, and have no furlough. My only fear is that some of the egomaniac UPS negotiator types might not want to look weak, in advance of 2012, by "caving in" on a financial benchmark.

Here's something else to consider: MANY of the 300 are taking mil leave, with or without a furlough. Many of them are still young enough, that they are still finishing up their Guard/Reserve careers, so they have that as a back-up. So...if UPS furloughs 300, that means many guys in the 300-400 range will be hitting the pavement as well.

I don't think so, not with some EB elections this fall (including the top spot)

That's not true. Most guys don't have orders for a couple years only for months. They would still be considered furloughed even if on mil leave. To get to the 300-400 range, UPS would have to up the total furlough numbers.
