Default Civil War Battle Deaths

Good job Otto. However, the civil war stats looked a little odd to me. Here's another source.....makes you wonder how they could be so far off. Truth's probably somewhere in the middle.

The Price in Blood!
Casualties in the Civil War
At least 618,000 Americans died in the Civil War, and some experts say the toll reached 700,000. The number that is most often quoted is 620,000. At any rate, these casualties exceed the nation's loss in all its other wars, from the Revolution through Vietnam.
The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:
Battle deaths: 110,070 Disease, etc.: 250,152 Total 360,222
The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:
Battle deaths: 94,000 Disease, etc.: 164,000 Total 258,000
The leading authority on casualties of the war, Thomas L. Livermore, admitting the handicap of poor records in some cases, studied 48 of the war's battles and concluded:
Of every 1,000 Federals in battle, 112 were wounded.
Of every 1,000 Confederates, 150 were hit.
Mortality was greater among Confederate wounded, because of inferior medical service.

A couple of years ago one of my young sons asked me what Memorial Day was for. I gathered all of kids together and explained it to them. I also explained how on one side of their family or the other they had a relative that had been in every major conflict since the Revolution.

They decided they wanted Memorial Day to be special for our family. I showed the boys a Medal of Honor site and we found that one recipient was buried very near to our home. We looked up his citation, went to his grave, placed fresh flowers (along with a copy of his citation), and said a prayer. He was Navy. My then 7 year old broke out in the Navy song. They had learned all of the service songs in school. The kids decided to sing at the graves of many service members that day. They had all been marked with flags.
Let's just say that either I was very moved or my allergies were really bad.
It has become a family tradition. We visit a different site each year. Amazingly, not that hard to find.

Please do me a fovor. Give all of them a hug and tell them that a total stranger is very, very proud of them. My allergies are bothering me, too.

His son works here and is extremely proud of him. ... but like Surgar Ray's son said on the 7UP commercial... awww he's just my dad.
Will I be able to shake the Colonels hand or do I have to find him in the RHOF? Does he have a brick at the memorial? It'd be an honor to meet him in any capacity.

That's pretty impressive Connor. And that, folks, is ideally what all Americans should be doing--making Memorial Day truly memorial for the fallen.

Went to Charleston, SC and visited Patriots' Point where the carrier Yorktown is berthed. THere is an outstanding Medal of Honor museum on board that is well worth the $$$ for the tour.

He lives in North Carolina right now. Not sure on a brick, I'd be interested in finding out about one for him.

He's out and about from time to time, still fly's his own airplane occasionally. PM me for more info on his where abouts.
