I agree but so should everyone else. It's not like reduced flying for 1-2 months will bankrupt you and if it will, you need to reevaluate your spending/savings habits. (not you personally Shaggy, but "you" as in any pilot on the property)

You are still not working here but you keep your medical, longevity, and jumpseat privileges. Don't let your hatred of UPS get in the way of doing what is right not just for yourself but for the pilot group as a whole.

Very well stated. These guys are speaking based purely on emotion. I'm sure they don't mean that they would rather get furloughed than volunteer. If they do mean it, well, they might just get their wish.

So??????? Who cares?????? A lot of us will get what we want too (more time off which is otherwise not available)!

No offense Shaggy, but I don't understand this way of thinking in the least bit.

With all the comments regarding the junior 300:We all need to review the facts as posted by the EB on the website. It breaks down the demographics in a very detailed fashion regarding the survey.
Will give some numbers though. The 1988 hires volunteered the most money: $11million (so much for the old guy argument).
How about the 2007 folks? About 150 responded in the survey said they would do something and have a nearly $9 million contribution . (So much for the most junior not participating). About 85 in the 2006 year for just over $4million, and the 105 or so from the 2005 class contribute just over $6million.
So the survey demonstrates: The most senior and the most junior are contributing the most voluntary savings. The graphs look like a reverse bell curve. Check them yourself, but for all, it appears nearly every one of the junior 300 DID state they would do something, many significantly. I think that argument can rest. Likewise, about the ND crowd.
The rest of the year groups it appears are just below the average of 29% surveyed participation rate. But the savings make the totals needed.
Keeping the perspective. We are still in this together 100%. Don't worry about the 5% <g> Stay focused. I am looking fwd to taking my extra family vacation time too.

I agree that UPS does not HAVE to furlough. Unfortunately, we cannot control what the company does. We can only control what our response is to their actions. In my opinion, the best response is to help ourselves.
Your post brings up some good points. I volunteered for the RDG and I am an ANC F/O in the bottom 300.

Just grabbing at a wag of numbers to emphasize your point about furloughes:

These numbers may be off, but in ANC 230 out of 275 F/Os are in the bottom 300. Once furloughed, a number slightly less than 230 F/O's will need to be moved to ANC, retrained, etc. To replace those 230 F/O's, 230 junior Capts will lose their seat, get retrained and become senior F/O's again. So 230 Capts that were line holders will be back on reserve.

Although we can debate the numbers, that's not the point, the point is that furloughes will have an effect on 60-70% of the pilot group. The furlough is a bunch of bunk, but our union at least gave us a choice.

The company took the bottom 300, probably the happiest group on the property (the new hires), and has sowed the seeds of discontent and mistrust. A lousy move which over the course of their careers; the ill-will and it's intangible costs will make the $131 million savings look like a speck.

I'm finally seeing why the older chaps are so hell-bent on the company.

As a bottom 300, just wanted to say thanks to all whom are volunteering.
Thanks,
I and my family appreciate it.

Initially I thought, "hey I'm 16 years seniority, why should I give up $15,000 for each bid period of job share. My job's secure....I've put in my time..blah blah blah" Then that little voice, a real pain in the ass, said, quit being such a selfish prick. Besides, the time off can be put to good use and you can afford it. Remember, the word UNION?

Pere -

Thank you. You are most certainly a powerful man. Seriously though, we at the bottom salute you. If, in fact, we dine in hell, I'll buy the first round and toast you.

~180 from the bottom.
