Here is who should volunteer for 1 of the programs.

1. All of the Bottom 300. If this thing doesn't work you will be on the street.
2. Any Captain that will be downgraded as the result of the furlough.
3. Any pilot that will be displaced to ANC that doesn't want to be there.
4. Every pilot over the age of 60. You won the age lottery, you can afford to give a little back.
5. Any pilot that routinely bids reserve because they don't fly much. If we furlough and we actually stop picking up open time your cushy gig will be over.
6. Any pilot that routinely picks up open time. You will lose a lot more than 75 hours of pay without that ability
7. Any pilot that just wants to do the right thing.

Please add to the list as you see fit.

8. That should cover at least 60-70% of the pilots on the list, maybe more !

Don't forget: Any pilot who just wants to work a reduced schedule or take some time off.

There are a lot of us out there who see this as a great opportunity to take a break and see the family more. Some have spouses that work, others value the time at home more than the money. This is a win-win for me...work less, prevent furloughs. I will bid 40hr lines the rest of my career if they are available.

I wholeheartedly agree!

Another GREAT program that exists at other carriers (SWA I believe?) but has unfortunately never received traction here is the ability to drop trips into a "secondary" open time pool (down to approximately 50% credit.) If no one picks up the trip you remain responsible to fly it. The benefit here is that those who wish to fly their butts off (for additional coin) are not impacting manning or upgrade times or any of the multitude of common laments against those who pickup trips. Either the flying is covered by the original bidder or it is picked up by someone eager to make extra money. Manning levels are not impacted; the flying is just shifted among the existing crew force.

This has additional benefits to the "dropper" as he can selectively drop trips he deems undesirable (length, day/night, conflict with personal commitments, etc...) Additionally, some months you may wish to fly a full schedule and not be locked into a job-sharing commitment. It's flexibility to selectively drop from 0-50% of one's schedule is unmatched, so long as there is a willing body to pickup what you dropped. At other carriers where this is an option it's my understanding that it's viewed VERY favorably. I hope our EB gives this strong consideration in the future.

Interesting concept Avg Joe. It does however bring up potential problems or at least a few questions such as what happens to ones guarantee when they drop a trip from a line that was less than guarantee to begin with, ex; 70 credit hour line and you drop 20 hours, are you paid 50 or 55 hours? This may allow the camels (er companies) nose under the tent on the subject of guarantee.

Number 6 doesn't make sense. How would they lose more that 75 hours? They wouldn't.

Why should he be one to choose from one of the 7 options? Explain that one.....?

Number 7 is totally subjective. YOU think it's the right thing to do but what about the next guy.... is it right for him?

By the way, I'm in the kitchen, watching the Derby pregame show and stirring the pot.

A downgraded captain will lose about $100,000 per year in pay. If they did one bid period of RLG or JS they would lose at most 75 hours of pay. If this furlough mitigation plan works and they don't get downgraded and tyhey come out way ahead.
