IPA UPS agreement

People will volunteer for stuff they like and bypass on stuff they do not like. This opportunity is far larger than a furlough prevention--it has the capacity to give guys breaks throughout a long career that suits their individual needs. It has the capacity to be modified during good times when short term overmanning on certain fleets gives rise to a cost save/share program where cost savings are split between the person going on a leave and the company. Example--if we are 50 over in a seat and those 50 guys are willing to VOLUNTEER for a few months off at half pay with jump seats instead of sitting in a crash pad--think of the options for the future if this works out now. Key point is the contract was not touched which it seems almost all of the bottom 300 guys support.
Just my 2 cents:

When this whole furlough threat started, I was convinced that the membership would vote to send the 300 up the river, without thinking twice about it. I've experienced this at a Legacy, and have many friends at other airlines see the same thing.
My heartfelt thanks go out to UPS, the EB, but most importantly, to the 846 leaders among us with the guts to step up to the plate with compassion and sacrifice, and de-screw a very screwed up situation.
Great to see that "We Take Care of Our Own," isn't just an empty union slogan on a bumper sticker. Evidently, it really means something.

I have to agree. We are in this together and the Company and the IPA(that is us just in case anyone forgot) have done a good job of offering us a reasonable compromise. A compromise that allows us to respond in the best way based on our individual situation and at the same time help the group.
I am not sure you understand that you are spitting on someone who is helping you. You may feel entitled to a certain treatment, but it is not your right. I would feel the inclination to thank my fellow pilots and wish them well.
All of them.

I don't feel ENTITLED to anything! You guys have really misunderstood me. I've been furloughed before, and I know how it works.
And by the way, I do believe I sincerely expressed gratitude in a previous post:

The bottom of every seniority list (since the beginning of mankind) has been vulnerable to staffing reductions. It simply is a fact of life. For you to now dismiss this reality and blame your potential misfortune on your co-workers is disingenuous at best.

highsky... so the guy retiring early, job sharing or taking a leave of absence isn't doing it because it personally benefits his/her circumstance, rather he's doing it to "demonstrate his selfless aspect of character" to "share in the burden of the economic times"?

Dude, I don't understand you. The irony is, we both see things the same way. You just don't see it. Apparently there is some sort of miscommunication going on here.
Sweet Jesus, if I wanted this kind of drama, all I have to do is call up my ex-girlfriend!

Dude... you were the one attacking your fellow crew members for "sending you up a river". Do you recall that statement? You blamed your potential furlough on your union brothers and I called you on it. Now you're copping a Vinnie Barbarino attitude of, "What, what'd I say?"

I'm surprised and pleased that the IPA and UPS have produced what appears to be a win-win solution to a bad predicament. The company wins by saving money, gaining crew force manning flexibility (that they didn't have previously) and, of course, they still maintain control.
Among the best ideas has got to be the new ability to "job share" between two crew members. I foresee this being WILDY popular as it allows for substantial time off and NOT an all or nothing income proposition like VLOA's. Best yet, the distribution of flying is worked out between the pilots and not dictated by the company! This gives great flexibility for those of us with kids that must vacation around school schedules, or working moms that desire more time with the kids, or more time with the spouse... or a thousand other reasons someone might want more time off for less pay. During peak the company can reduce or eliminate this provision if they need the bodies, thereby giving them more flexibility while retaining control. A true win-win. I hope they consider making this offering permanent!
The VLOA's (while maintaining full benefits) lets those who can afford it, or have other income sources, take a sabbatical and pursue other interests.
The other voluntary programs are equally compelling for those who are eligible to take advantage of them... i.e., early retirement without penalty, military LOA's, etc...
Nice job EB!

Let me double check this:
Guys who are 62.5+ can sign up for "early retirement" when they would have been forced to retire until Dec 13th 2007. Now they get their social security benefit at no penalty (62.5 yrs of age) and an extra year of service credit for retirement and no longer have to commute while saving a job?
I would think these guys would think that's one hell of a deal.

They're holding out for one round trip ticket to CRK from their home of record (business class or better) each month for life, plus life time prescription drug benefits with Viagra as a paid prescription. (and no $5 co-pay)

People are people, and many will vote their own self-interest, at the end of the day, if a choice is ever presented to them. That's just life. And I'm not saying that's right or wrong. It's just the way it is.
OBVIOUSLY!!! If any IPAer hits the street in a furlough, it will be the sole responsibility of UPS.
Are we on the same page now?
And yes, I brought some drama to that woman, but she has repaid the pain ten-fold to me!
Jeez, when I think about how much money she cost me, then divide by the number of sexual events...I REALLY got screwed.

Well, perhaps my sentiments were not accurately expressed by my remarks. Hard to do with a keyboard.

Highsky don't worry about making sense out of what AVGJOE and Jungle have to say, those two are on their own team! Having read many of their posts on this forum I wonder if their opinions would change if they were in the bottom 300?
