It depends who is doing the JS or RDG. Time will tell, but the savings generated will be the greatest at the top end of the pay/seniority scale. If the highest paid pilots jobshare, that leaves the lower paid to pickup any open trips (if there are any). Junior assignments are given in junior order already. According to the survey though, most that opted for these voluntary programs were skewed to the most junior group so time will tell if enough takers at the top end help this option generate big savings.

On the early retirement end of things, is there any real incentive now? I understand the "no reduction in actuarial benefit" for those that wish to retire early. History is showing though most opting to stay past 60. What about those currently over 60? They get an extra one year credit? I've heard some saying they need an extra 5 years credit to get them moving. I could see them going for a job share but not necessarily an early retirement.

Anyhow, I applaud the IPA and UPS for so far what seems like a program that could work.

Ok, now I think you may be correct. I don't think the measure will generate the savings sought by the company but they can say see, we tried...

What in God's green earth are you talking about?

When I was junior (like EVERYONE else in this industry!) I didn't exhale until I had 25% of the seniority list below me. EVERY airline pilot understands the vagaries, seniority-based system, and cyclical nature of this industry when we started in aviation. When I was junior, I wouldn't dream... couldn't begin to even POSSIBLY BEGIN to fathom... that it was anyone else's responsibility to provide for me (or my family) in life. Where on this big beautiful dust ball of a planet have you obtained the belief that others are responsible for your well being or that it is their DUTY to ensure it?

We have a possible great outcome to a bad situation, lets not digress into mud throwing. I'm grateful to all who sign up for something. Thank you. I'm hoping I can find someone senior in the MD-11 ANC copilot list who would like to JS for a LONG time. I wasn't planning on this, but it is a nice solution.

Like I said. Because of plenty of people like you, I was convinced in the past that this furlough would come to fruition.

How am I possibly responsible for your furlough?

Silly semantic games you play highsky. If you think I'm responsible for your furlough ("send you up the river", as you call it) just man up and speak your peace with a civil tone. You won't offend me.

I have to agree. We are in this together and the Company and the IPA(that is us just in case anyone forgot) have done a good job of offering us a reasonable compromise. A compromise that allows us to respond in the best way based on our individual situation and at the same time help the group.

I am not sure you understand that you are spitting on someone who is helping you. You may feel entitled to a certain treatment, but it is not your right. I would feel the inclination to thank my fellow pilots and wish them well.
All of them.

Look, all I'm saying is that it's just human nature to look out for yourself. So, no, I'm not neccesarily throwing mud at anyone who would prefer to not sacrifice any money to prevent a furlough.

That's why I fully expected to be on the street in a few months.

But I am really glad to see that there are hundreds (846) of us that do, in fact, have a selfless aspect of character to share in the burden of the economic times, and help out their union brothers.
