Call me a "glass if half-empty" kind of guy, but what kind of training events will be generated by people NOT in the bottom 300 accepting this leave? Do you think UPS will actually let this happen? I don't see them going for it.

Yes, I agree, it's a huge step to get this far, but let's keep it realistic and realize UPS can turn this thing off like a light switch. I'll believe it when I see it.

I mean, these guys are outa here anyways once the 8's are gone.
Seems like an over 65 FE shouldn't be eligible since that person would not be opting to retire but forced into an inactive status/retirement due to no equipment/job. But, the MOU only reads "crewmember who will be age 60 or older by august 1 2009." ???

Good luck guys. Especially in today's economy it would be a real success to get a big chunk of guys to step up and take some kind of pay hit. Let's face it, traditionally its difficult to part airline guys and money. Especially at the bar. Did your agreement also come with an unvoluntary across the board pay give back? Good luck again.

Per the IPA Executive Board MOU,

Q: May age 65 and older flight engineers on the retiring DC-8 fleet take advantage of Early Retirement Option 2?
A: Yes. All crewmembers age sixty (60) or older by August 1, 2009, may voluntarily retire as outlined above with this additional benefit.

No compansation gives back or concessions at all. The volunteer programs where all survey designed by the pilot association. The retirement deal looks reasonably good , may get more takers than originally planned.

There may be more than meets the eye, but on the surface this sounds like a good deal for a lot of pilots, both junior and senior. I'm sure the EB was burning some midnight oil to get this thing passed. I'm sure they tried to get the best deal that they could. I know that UPS management is infamous around the world for its relationship with the IPA, but perhaps this is going to work out for the better. Relax, smile...at least until June 1st.

A lot less training events. Imagine parking the DC8 coupled with a reduction in force displacement/realignment bid = $$$$.

Yeah, this sounds like a cost to me and not a savings. And you KNOW all 43 over 65 guys are gonna take advantage of it too. Hell, I would too!

We all have an opportunity. The programs will create "effective" vacancies throughout the system. If there are many captain volunteers or retirements, those crewmembers would have to be back filled, the same for F/O's, I think this is the logic behind the lack of a realignment bid for the 8. This would be the only way to make the program work. No one can predict where the volunteers will come from. Once they do volunteer, UPS can set up a realignment bid that will accommodate the programs.

I think UPS controls the spots available for VLOAs. F/S/D. It'll be interesting where they determine they can lose crews. DC-8 all seats?
