I'll probably just take the route our DC8 pilot did and start using instead.

Love that show!

Is it all or nothing? I mean suppose we get enough participation to save 80% of what UPS wants. Do you think they will then furlough 25 guys? Doesn't seem likely that they would give up the usefulness of OT/JA as the result of a OT/JA ban just to downsize a few dozen.

The MOU says all or nothing. Who knows what UPS really wants to do. Obviously with the parking of the DC8 we are overstaffed but I don't think anyone knows how much an OT/JA ban would hurt them. We'll know in a few weeks.

I am not saying I have a sugar momma at home or have some massive life savings to bridge the gap. It is quite the contrary in my house. We do have our cars paid for, not credit cards, and we live within our means. My largest problem/blessing is we have our first child coming in Sept and my wife doesn't make enough to justify her working after the baby comes.
Well looks like you screwed up there homey!

Just kidding with ya! Seriously though, CONGRATULATIONS! Babies are so much fun (once they start sleeping through the night....LOL).

Of course the ball is in UPS' court if we don't get enough participation but I think the fact they took the deal alone indicates that management didn't want to get into a furlough - most especially furloughing ANC pilots and downgrading ANC captains and all the cost involved including having to carry a "training bubble" to cover it. All for what might be only a year to 18 months.

Naturally it is in our best interests if all the folks who indicated they would take one of the options to follow through but if I were a betting man I would say the ANC guys are safe regardless.

I think that EVERYBODY on the bottom 300 list should be required to participate. After all, these are the one getting saved from being on the street. Let’s assume that a pilot, bottom 50 say, doesn’t participate and takes absolutely no pay cuts. Then another pilot, say bottom 250 takes a bid period off and therefore sees a huge pay cut. Both are saved from furlough but only one actually helped the cause. I don’t know many people who can simple live without 2 months salary, but that is much better than the unemployment check you will get for who knows how long.

L'il J: I guarantee you that every single pilot on the list can come up with an excuse not to participate like you. I am still paying off my debt from first year pay, you think I can afford it right now? Many buddies of mine have sold their house in the lower 48, moved their entire family to ANC, bought a house, and now are faced with all this. You think they can afford it? No, but we all must pitch in to help out, even if just a little. I guess I would like to hear your thoughts on why many of us should go into debt and sacrifice our salary, but you don’t have to. I would also like to hear your honest answer on what you responded on the survey. No offense please, just having a hard time trying to figure your though process out on these posts.

I finally had a chance to look over the furlough protection website and the MOU in detail, and my biggest problem is deciding which program I want to choose.

At the very least, I'll take a RDG for a bid period. 37.5 guaranteed to a max of 60 hrs per month...pretty painless in my opinion, when considering the alternative.

I'm also interested in pursuing other interests that would involve a long term VLOA, but lining things up and making a decision in the next three weeks is cutting the time factor down to an absolute minimum. I'm not sure I want to commit myself to a year or more away from the job, until I had all my ducks in a row for my other venture.

Also, maintaining currency (recurrent training and landings) while on a long term VLOA is going to be a pain in the keister. Commuting up to ANC to get 3 bounces every couple of months wasn't what I had in mind.

Does anybody know why long term VLOA and Mil leave guys have to get permission from the Chief Pilot to jumpseat? We'll still be in CASS, won't we?

YGTBSM! You are trying to say everyone above you has to pony up thousands of dollars to save you. I was lucky to get hired a little sooner than you. If furloughed I would not expect those above me to feel obligated to give up pay. I have done more than my share to save the company money via mil leave already. I could take mil leave if furloughed, but I won't/can't deploy to Afghanistan to save a job. I guess I am a selfish jerk.
