The "system" will replace a staging pilot with business when there is an equipment change. That happens frequently. At least one ACP has advised pilots to book business.
This results in penalizing those that follow the rules as written. Book business or get bumped by someone that does when they swap tails in the computer. In at least one hard to jumpseat location, all pilots now book business.
The company needs to fix the system to follow their own rules. And they need consistency from the chief pilots office.
Maybe they could take a brake from enforcing uniform policy, catching expense account cheaters and writing the lines without the SIG and fix this.

When LA opened as a domicile, crews couldn't STAGE into all four of the co-terminal aerodromes (LAX, ONT, BUR, LGB). If a trip started in ONT, a crew member couldn't stage into ONT - only LAX. Since I was building the lines, I disputed EVERY ONT pairing - can't get to work - can't fly the trip. Jumpseat Admin - senior manager (BP) exclaimed - he wouldn't fix the system unless directed by somebody at the VP level. That's fine - trips remained disputed! Finally, FDX Legal authorized BUSINESS - that way crews could work around the jumpseat rice-bowl problem. That was FEB '02! If anybody has OLD SIG notes - it's there.
Also the two leg/two day commutes into ANC are a problem with the 14/15 day issue. BUSINESS was also authorized to take advantage of booking the first jumpseat - which doesn't end at your domicile, and then booking the second jumpseat the next day - that doesn't originate at your residence city. Authorization was by SF, who has retired.
It seems a lot of the agreements here are like folklore - not much written down.

I've been bumped as a stager as well.
There was an unscrupulous individual up here in the Northwest on the MD pulling R24. He was listing himself every single day of his reserve block as business class "just in case" he got called to ensure that he had a seat to get to work. If he wasn't called out, he'd simply cancel his seat that evening. But in doing so, (if the plane was full), he was bumping the last guy who had listed himself as staging. By the time this idiot decided to cancel his seat, the poor "staging" guy had to jumpseat off-line or call in sick because there was no other way to get to Memphis before the showtime of his next trip. Completely Unsat.

If we were ALL being professions-on-the-job, the company wouldn't have to waste time with the uniform slobs, and the ER cheaters. Amazing how much of a $hitstorm we bring on ourselves.
The whole jumpseat abuse probably would be cleaned up if it had pilot oversight instead of that bureaucracy they have running the show. I tried to book a staging JS online from Europe a couple of months ago and the system said my home location was not one of my staging cities. Tried to skype JSs to find out *** was going on--never could get anyone to answer the phone. After a few hours, I booked the JS via business--fortunately, there were seats available so no one was bumped, but upon arrival in MEM, I went to JSs with the problem. The system had my staging location as Cleveland, about 1000 miles away--no idea how that happened.

I don't think that is possible. Whenever I've tried to book a jump seat (for legitimate reasons) within 48 hours of a similar leg, I get a message saying you can't do it. Maybe you can with a business status.

It is indeed BS.....but for another reason than you describe. The J/S reservation system will not let you book a J/S "2 days prior or 1 day after" a similar booking. Example: If a pilot has a J/S reserved on the 1st of a month from SEA-ANC he is prevented by the reservation system from booking the same J/S on the 30th or 31st prior or the 2nd after. Soooo, the R-24 guy you highlight could not do what you claim he did.

Nope, meant I j/sed to MEM, did a one day trip (now I remember that it was a backend dh), came home, and then went back MEM the next night. Two flights within 48 hours from the same location back to MEM. If you try to book that on line, you get the message that you can't book two j/s within 48 hours from the same location. I called JSA and explained the situation and they booked me on the second flight.
