Default NWA Cargo.....no more???

I flew LAX-NRT yesterday on a NW flight and struck up a conversation with one of the (male) flight attendants. We were talking about the integration of Delta with NW...blah, blah, blah...and then he said that the cargo side of NWA was going away. He said it had to do with not being able to compete against other outfits.

I took it as being sold off but I haven't heard any rumblings about NWA going away. Of course I don't visit the "Majors" forum very often either.

Has anyone heard of this? Could be a good opportunity for FDX and UPS to strengthen the bottom line.

On a side note...this was the first time in the last 5 years that NW was using an A-330 from LAX-NRT and not a 74 strange...

I was always under the impression that the NWA Cargo operation was a money maker? I wonder why Delta would want to do away with that (except that they aren't in the cargo business)?

I think I read somewhere that by Dec. of this year, the cargo ops will be done. I'm not sure if I read this here or on flightinfo. Take it for what it's worth...

Cargo revenue, particularly hard hit, fell by 44%, or $146 million. Delta announced that on Dec. 31, it will ground the Northwest fleet of 14 Boeing 747-200 freighters.

Dec 31, 2009 the cargo ops will be shut down. Delta does belly freight, not freighters. (Not a dig on freightdogs, just a corporate philosophy.) The cargo slots will be replaced most likely by ERs out of SEA or PDX. How this plays out vis a vis displacements or retirements will be "interesting" to say the least.

Thanks for posting USMCFDX, good article.

That has to be good news for FDX and UPS. Every little bit of extra volume helps right now. Hopefully the marketing department is all over it

As long as NOBODY at Delta / NWA loses their jobs. I'm glad theyre cutting the cargo part of the company. This creates a little less lift availability out there and increases the demand for those carriers that specialize in freight.

They're not cutting the cargo department, they're transitioning to belly freight only.

There is more to air cargo than FDX and UPS. Hopefully this will help us lowly cargo guys at the Atlas', Kalittas, Worlds etc. of the world too.

To repeat the sentiment already expressed in this thread, I hope any gains for anyone of us isn't at the expense of anybody's job at Delta.
