You might wait until the furlough negotiations is concluded, I think that longevity protection might be one of the things we could get from the company.

So telling them that I want to attend Law school to help the union fight evil is out of the question?

Yep, telling them you wanted to be a Labor Attorney didn't go over well <bg>

I could be wrong on this but I don't think it is wise to ask for leaves right now. If you are granted one right now there is no guarantee that UPS will reduce the furlough list by 1. If you take a leave as part of the IPA's negotiations then that could/will be the case.

Food for though.

If you do that take a picture of the expression on the ACP's face, it would probably get framed and hung on the IPA office wall.

This is absolutely priceless... "we're in such economic trouble, we may need to put 300 of you out on the street. Oh, wait, you want to go and pursue further education while maybe helping the company cut costs and save someone else who can't afford to quit working for a couple years? well, then, no you can't." What a bunch of jackasses. Seriously -- what is wrong with these people? Casey would be rolling over in his grave if he knew how crappy his company treats employees now. 10 most ethical companies -- what a joke.
