May sound goofy, but I thought learning to be a flight engineer was more difficult than learning to be an FO on the 727 or the MD11. It wasn't that the JOB was harder, but flying a jet as a crew member was similar to the years of flight experience in some respects. Managing the panel, however--was all new.
Add the fact that for the downgradees it will be a paycut...why would you want to rush that training? I say go as slowly as it takes to learn the job properly.

Let me rephrase that ... I went through the entire (hazing) syllabus including a prog ride and "rating" ride when only a PC (instead of the prog/rating) would have been required to send me to the line
