Default UPS furlough and the volcano...

It seems like this could be going on and off for quite some time. Hopefully the union is offering to do anything needed in exchange for a no furlough agreement... from the ops update I noted "My thanks to those crewmembers who have already made a difference by stepping in and helping coordinate the operation in Fairbanks. Please contact your dispatcher, scheduler, domicile staff or System Operations if you see problems, or would like to suggest improvements. "

As someone who will be furloughed, I cannot say that I think stepping up to the plate as they hold me hostage is motivational.

If you were a big muckety-muck at UPS and you observed the crews helping out, how would you feel? I'm not saying that it's worth $54M, but a lot of things at the margin can be determined by how one feels.

I'm sure you know that this is a business decision, and has nothing to do with feelings. I'm very happy to be here, and I've always done a professional job. That being said, it isn't going to do anything to help me keep my job if they decide to furlough. My only point is that they could potentially be helped with some contract relief, and this affords a certain potential increase in ones bargaining position. If people are willing to do whatever is needed without a quid pro quo, then it has zero dollar value at the bargaining table. It isn't a matter of trying to hurt them, any more than they are trying to hurt us with a furlough. It's a business decision and it's a fluid negotiation.

They have feelings!?!?!?

When did this revelation occur?

Redoubt erupting now may help us. The IPA gets a report of all the JA that happens every month. When all the irregular ops are over the IPA needs to go to UPS and show them all the flights that would not have operated if we had an official JA ban in place. UPS has not conducted or announced a furlough yet, hopefully this last week will show them they need us to pick up the slack for problems in and out of their control.

Very good point. The more JA we show them, the more they will realize what they will lose with a furlough. The service that is made as a result can probably be quantified in dollar terms also.

I agree with you that it is a business decision. But if there is a furlough, there is most likely a range of numbers that would determine the final count. If I'm feeling good toward the IPA, I'd probably pick the lower number. If not, I'd go with the higher number. Now that's just me, but don't we all work that way to some extent? Every single body we keep will make a big difference to those on the margin who stay, or leave.

And if you are in the bottom number what is my motivation again?

The problem is there is always the guys too happy to help out. Like the do-gooders that helped with the FAI evacuation! Nicely done senior captains!

I believe this will hurt the furloughees as UPS will now know exactly how the MEF worked during redoubt and how it will work well for them when the IPA bans opentime.

Take all my comments with a HUGE grain of salt because I believe no matter what at least 150 are getting furloughed and that includes me.
