Life at UPS, FEDEX, Cathay (cargo haulers)

GoldenGoose.... 9 posts and hopefully in receive more than transmit:
1- I understand the adage "hold your friends close and enemies closer", but why does it seem to apply? Your light is no brighter for kicking over others' lights or some such old saying...
2- YOU are lurking in the CARGO forum. ****? Get slam clicked today? Must be that month off you are enjoying...
3- I have bros in pax that like it, I have bros in cargo that like it. Doesn't make either good or bad to the OP.
4- Others have covered enough to inform the OP. OP didn't say what kind of herk flying they did- lots of lifts at Pope or overseas, long-haul, 1 to a full stop. Probably saw it all. I find mil flying to be more extreme- bad days can't be paid enough and good days would be done pro bono if it was about money.

Well I guess I'll go against the freight crowd. I've been here at UPS for 15 years, and I would rather be flying for a PAX carrier IF the pay stayed at 2000 levels. It is a job. I flew pax for 5 years before UPS, and it was much more enjoyable. Night flying and living at a warehouse across the ramp sucks. No Starbucks and a paper one minute away. Your on the dark side of an airport flying at 3:00 am. No passes, etc.
The crews are great, management is not. UPS has alot of inbreeding. But like I said before, it comes down to the coin at the end of the day. And the PAX carriers pay crap now.

The worst airline job is better than the best freight job any day of the week.
Can you picture walking across a snowy and windy ramp as a senior Captain while trying to dodge forklifts? Then climbing a flimsy ladder to reach the cockpit. Working all night for a week at a time.
Please. The pay is better now, but anybody who is honest will tell you that the job sucks.
Been there, done that, have the t-shirt.

Keep telling yourself that. Penang, Cebu, Singapore, Seoul, etc. All for more than your captain makes as an F/O. I worked for two pax airlines and as for dodging forklifts....you mean being driven to the airstairs after being picked up by a Mercedes at the Sheraton Saigon. Maybe you're so senior that you don't do redeyes. Anyway, get out of the cargo forum if it sucks so bad.

Supp. 121 Cargo Airline... 39 days on the road (my new record!), NO duty days limits (African flying may exceed 30 hours for SINGLE crews), airplanes older than I with hardly a working APU, and I love it! Still wanna be at Brown or Purp., but Im hanging on to this to make it there, and not another PAX carrier! To each his own...

I make a ridiculous amount of money and barely ever work off of reserve at UPS. QOL is very high if you live in domicile and bid reserve. I predict we will hire by 2011, but it all depends on the recession. FDX is in big trouble as they hired way to many as the age 65 legislation surprised lots of folks. UPS is lean and we will have most of the 747-400 Capts retire soon.
