FDX Folks in HKG

Yo peri...
I know of at least one HKG Capt. that is doing the commute thing. It seems to be working for him so far. He does it from FLA... I don't know if he took the actual "crashpad" section of the CBA, but I do know he didn't opt for the LOA, or regular sec. 6 move package.

Crash Pad moves are discouraged by the enhanced option.
The Company needs people living in domicile to protect the flying.
The only crash-pad option is in the section 6 move package, which
provides none of the other supplements except tax equalization.
Commuting to Europe will be difficult due to the flight schedule planned.
Hong Kong will be similar to the Subic schedule but could also become
less commutable.
9. Commuting. The intent was to discourage commuting. Small bases require pilots in domicile
to draw from. The anticipated Paris flight schedule will not facilitate commuting to the U.S. If
you commute you are restricted from the monthly allowances since they require residence in
domicile. There are no crash-pad moves in the enhanced option. There is a crash pad move in the
section 6 move package but no tax equalization unless the LOA is passed.

Whats up HKG people. Looks like I coming eastward on this bid. Couple of questions for the locals.
1. Who lets us jumpseat internationally. UPS?????
2. Anyone living in the mid level areas?
3. Anyone doing any fishing and what are you catching?
4. How is recurrent training working out when you come back to Memphis?
Thanks, Steve Scheinblum

Sorry, JZ, stand corrected. One of the LCAs in SFS commuted. Was up to a 5 leg horror show to the Southeast. Just listening to him describe it made me cringe. He had the luxury of a little bit of seniority. Granted he had to take the Otter to get to MNL. My roommate goes back for MLA. He doesn't like it & he gets a ticket. Suggest it is only feasible for those with seniority to patch together enough time off & willing to pony up for a ticket. Pax Jseats are crimped by weight restrictions & standby travelers who have priority over JS. 7 days home is barely enough. Speak only for myself having made the journey several times in a month. It blows.

Peri, you are correct about that my brother... it does blow. But is doable.
abc,
I know from past experiences, OAL that let us commute are NWA, UAL, AirCanada. Don't know if it has to be in the cabin, as I've always been given a seat in the back, but I believe on NWA you can sit in the cockpit with Capt.'s permission of course! Actually the worst experience I've had j/s in yrs... unfortunately was on us. No fault of the crew, but one of the classic "what no one told you you've been bumped off the flight" ... from the ramp agent at show time, in Anc! Good luck

How safe do you think the drive is from HKG to CAN and back?
I have not heard good things from guys who've done it. Chinese drivers on Chinese highways aren't known for their safety in the first place.
Now throw in the fact that the driver more than likely worked (or was awake at home or elsewhere) all day and afternoon, drives a crew from HKG to CAN to arrive there at 11pm, sits there 2.5 hours waiting, then drives another crew from CAN to HKG arriving at 3:45am. Wonder what kind of duty time rules and and fatigue provisions a Chinese limo driver has....

I'll address fishing, there's this big trawler that sweeps Discovery Bay every Saturday. Some Chinese guys have polls out at the Central Ferry Pier, never seen them reel anything in. What's really scary is these 8 foot rowboats out in the harbor between the aircraft carriers and container ships that are reeling in stuff. I have no idea what cause I'm riding in the comfort of an airconditioned ferry, but it must be good for them to be out there. Then again they could be disguised USNS research vessels looking for subs.
That's all the help you get unless you voluntarily drop about 10 numbers over here.
D@mn I'm in Cebu and its raining so no suntan today.

NOT FEELING THE LOVE FROM AFAR. I just want to get a sport fisher and spend my days/nights out searching for fish while I perfect the latest asian techniques in blending the local juices and discovering a new fondness for asian hops with a bunch of new friends. Maybe I should be posting on the passover pay section with all my JUNIOR freinds who get to keep their pay (or even get raises) and stay stateside and drink budwiser.

UPS unfort. does not allow offline j/seaters internationally. I enjoyed visiting with the FDX folks in HKG.
The air quality does suck in HKG and worse in the "Joe" (Guanghouz), but it's just as bad in Philly and Perth Amboy.
HKG is an exciting city with plenty to do, but living there, IMHO can can get old.
Just my two HK$ worth,
FF
