When I get notified by UPS that I'm being furloughed, then I'll worry about it. I'm not going to lose sleep over something I have no control over.
Enjoying time with the family...

On a slightly different but related note: anybody know the process/availability of a voluntary leave of absence? Any of the more senior folks seen these offered/allowed in the past -- perhaps prior to the furlough announcement back in 01? Thanks.

The sky isn't falling but if things in this country keep going down the crapper, then it very well could by the end of the year. The ONLY reason there has not been a furlough here yet is because of the ANC domicile. I don't think there will be a furlough, but it was just made easier by forcing the most junior to the panel. Them just the facts man.

Everybody:
It was very obvious when they announced this realignment/displacement bid that the most junior crewmembers would end up on the panel. With the drawdown of the -8, this bid had to happen. This doesn't mean that they are going to furlough. (Disclaimer: It also doesn't say that they won't.) But, what this bid also did was put the most junior crewmembers in the cheapest seat. So, if they want to carry an excess, they do it most cost-effectively. Management has been quoted as saying that they need at least 2 years for people to be on the street for a furlough to be cost-neutral. I think that things will look a little better by then. As long as UPS doesn't cancel incoming aircraft orders, then we will be fat until retirements catch up.
If you are truly worried, then get your ducks in a row. Save money, pay down debt, etc. I've been there (furlough, that is) 3 times in a 5 year span. Otherwise, take the advice of MD11Pilot and enjoy time with your family until there is concrete talk of furloughs.
