UPSFO4LIFE,
I watch the news too and am fully aware of the state of the economy. It has already had an impact on my family. I was displaced to the panel last summer and have moved twice for UPS. I refuse to let the glass be half empty until the letter comes in the mail - only time will tell.

You won't go to training anytime soon if at all.
This bid decimated the DC8 instructor list.

That's a good point. Can the company arbitrarily assign training dates to those instructors so they could teach? Very interesting... Then again, could they use management guys to teach, or does it have to be IPA'ers?

There is a current FE IOE instructor who was awarded an FO with an effective date of 9/7/08 who has been kept on as an FE (with his approval). He was recently awarded a CPT upgrade.

Yes, they have some flexibility. They will also use management, but they are moving some supervisors as well. Regarding furlough, the IPA had a good briefing on that at the GMM's. If you missed it, it was pretty good info about seat usage in each fleet. The increase in flying on the A300 is higher than ever in its history (higher than peak 2007 and 2008) The 8 was way below norm, reason the displacement and made me one of the bastages that moved the F/O's down one on the MD. Check the IPA website, believe they have the brief on the Utube, It isn't as bleak as some make it out to be.

Everybody:
If you are truly worried, then get your ducks in a row. Save money, pay down debt, etc. I've been there (furlough, that is) 3 times in a 5 year span. Otherwise, take the advice of MD11Pilot and enjoy time with your family until there is concrete talk of furloughs.

What exactly is "concrete" talk of furloughs ?
The only thing that is concrete is when the notices hit the mail ... IMHO.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if my train of thinking is off but I really dont see what Brown has to lose by furloughing. It appears to me that the bottom 100 guys are probably in the FE seat now (is that right Roberto?). It also appears that the company has about 138 FEs now and only needs about 30-40 (based on DC8 CA and FO #s). That sounds to me like guarantee pay, healthcare, and benefits for about 100 guys that are sitting at home and going to have to be retrained at some point anyway. In addition what good are all those extra FEs if you cant pair them with CAs and FOs to build crews.
Basically, I dont think the whole "it takes two years to break even from a furlough" applies anymore. I think that applied before these last two bids went through and the bottom guys were spread out. Now that we have been reshuffled to put the bottom 100 in a seat where the company doesnt need them they have nothing to lose by sending out a 90 day notice tomorrow.
The only positive option I can think of is that they dont want to deal with an open time ban or how a furlough would appear to customers and investors so they decided to put us in the cheapest seat.
I hope I'm wrong and I'm not trying to be an alarmist. I'm part of that bottom 100 and it seems to me that we're costing them more to be on property than off...
