I would think that reduced stock purchase discounts would apply to us as well. I hadn't heard about that item.

UPS 4th Quarter Results Full Year 2008
ATLANTA, Feb. 3, 2009 - UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.83 for the fourth quarter, a 22% decline from the $1.07 adjusted diluted earnings per share for the same period last year. On a reported basis, diluted earnings per share were $0.25 and a loss of $2.52 for the fourth quarters of 2008 and 2007, respectively.
Reported results for the 2008 fourth quarter include the impact of a $575 million non-cash impairment charge primarily related to the UPS Freight business unit due to an extremely challenging LTL environment. Reported results for the 2007 fourth quarter included a $6.1 billion charge in the U.S. Domestic Package segment related to the withdrawal of UPS employees from the Central States Pension Plan. That withdrawal followed ratification of a long-term national master agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. For the full year, UPS posted adjusted operating profit of $6.0 billion and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $3.50, within the range the company provided mid-year. On a reported basis, operating profit was $5.4 billion and diluted earnings per share were $2.94.
The fact that UPS can make this kind of money in a recession economy should show you doom and gloom forecasters that this company is for real!! And BIG BROWN will continue to be a major player in the world economy.

Thanks for the abbreviated history lesson. While you are literally correct that the invasion STARTED in June, I think the intent of the post was to highlight the Germans total lack of foresight and planning (much like their foresight and planning in the US the last 6 years) which resulted the massive losses and eventual defeat the Germans suffered the following winter. A more thorough read of the link you provided has the following...
"The planning for Operation Barbarossa started on 18 December 1940; the clandestine preparations and the military operation itself lasted almost a year, from the spring of 1941, through the winter of 1941.
Operation Barbarossa remains the largest military operation, in terms of manpower, area traversed, and casualties, in human history. The failure of Operation Barbarossa resulted in the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany and is considered a turning point for the Third Reich.
Frostbite and disease caused more casualties than combat, and dead and wounded had already reached 155,000 in three weeks. Some divisions were now at fifty percent strength. The bitter cold also caused severe problems for their guns and equipment, and weather conditions grounded the Luftwaffe. Newly built up Soviet units near Moscow now numbered over 500,000 men and on December 5 they launched a massive counterattack which pushed the Germans back over 200 miles. The invasion of the USSR would cost the German Army over 250,000 dead and 500,000 wounded, the majority of whom became casualties after October 1. The most recent German estimate (Rüdiger Overmans) concluded that about 4.3 million Germans and a further 900,000 Axis forces lost their lives either in combat or in Soviet captivity. Operation Barbarossa is listed among the most lethal battles in world history."

US and UK intelligence officers caused a series of events in southern Europe that led the Germans to invade Greece and Yugoslavia. The invasion was successful, but caused Operation Barbarossa to be delayed until the beginning of Summer.
