The deal is stalled for the reasons you stated - too much headache for too little revenue. Besides, UPS and FedEx have already cherry-picked most of the "good" business away from DHL.

Commando & SSB,
I wouldn't be too quick to claim the deal is dead, even though it's an exceedingly complicated arrangement from many angles. You'd never guess the most complex part of the deal...yep, the label. Lots of privileged information imbedded in the little sucker. Anyway, I guess we'll all find out soon enough.

i think it should be fairly obvious that the deal is dead. Just ask your local DHL driver whose been laid off.
If there is any deal left, it is insignificant to UPS's earnings.
Apparently, there was some news today regarding UPS cost savings. Apparently no 401k match, reduced stock purchase discounts..etc. This only affects management for the time being.
Things won't be rosy here at brown for a while.

look at the 4Q#'s and 254 mil net includes a 575 mil non cash charge for UPS freight(LTL) and a loss at freight(LTL) of 495 mil. This means an operating pofit of 1.38 bil. in Q408 adjusted. and 6 bil. operating profit for the year. not bad on there stated volume decline.
In addition for all of 2008 we also spent 5.8 bil. on dividends and share repuchases. full year #'s to follow soon

I read that it was $803 million net profit for the 4Q, and $3.6 billion net profit for 2008. Financial reports are getting as bad as wine and coffee reviews to get to the bottom of.
**"Fourth quarter profit was 83 cents a share, down 22 percent from a
year ago, it said."
Translation: $0.83 cents a share is a $803 million dollar net income
profit for the fourth quarter.
**"Kurt Kuehn, UPS’s chief financial officer, said earnings per share
will be within a range of 52 to 68 cents." in the first quarter of 2009.
Translation: The company projects a profit of between $500 to $651
million dollars in the first quarter alone. We're talking net income
which is profit after taxes not operating profit which is quoted a lot.
Operating profit is the profit before taxes which is much higher.
For the full year 2008, UPS posted adjusted operating profit of $6.0
billion and net income of $3.6 Billion.

What is LTL or loss at freight?
