Interview experience:
I interviewed at 0800 yesterday in PDX. Met with the Mike Williamson, Assistant Chief Pilot at PDX. He discussed current openings at PDX. Basically, the turbine pilots here are senior and not going anywhere, so twinprop captains have to transfer to upgrade to turbo prop, or they leave for the regionals. Portland has been short piston prop captains ever since the Mike has worked here. The previous gouges were dead on regarding questions he covered. Read the 2/1/06 PDX interview –I studied that and it covered 90% of my interview. Be ready to draw systems on the twin you are most current on (or the one you studied), he’ll let you pick the aircraft. Only new things covered were detonation, aircraft stability, CFI duty time limitations, requesting the visual / contact approach, and if a headwind shears to a tailwind on the ILS what indications will you see. He skipped the infamous 4 questions, said that I probably already knew them because the gouge has been out for a while. They are looking for a 1 year verbal commitment and for turbine pilots a written contract (6 months BE99, 12 months BE 1900). If you are willing to be mobile, upgrades to turbine equipment can occur quickly (sometimes right out of indoctrination). Mike said that he reads the gouges here. He changes the sim profile every time but says that there is a marked difference between pilots who do the sim prep and don’t. I got 3 hours in the sim over the past 2 weeks flying the PA-31 configuration with turbulence and cross-winds. The recent sim time made the difference for me. Flew the sim at Hillsboro Aviation: HIO Farmington 4 DP, MMV ILS 22 pilot nav miss, hold Minnie LOM (just called the entry), cleared direct UBG VOR, HIO VOR DME C straight in full stop. No tricks/failures, a simple checklist. Checklist called for 17’’ MP on the ILS and 22’’ in cruise. On the ILS it seems like 22’’ worked a lot better and 25’’ in cruise worked well too. Fly the approach without flaps. Don’t need to mess with fuel pumps or cowl flaps. They have class dates on 2/21, 3/13 and every 3 weeks thereafter! Overall, the experience was far less intimidating than I was expecting. I don’t think they are looking for aces, just competent instruments pilots who are trainable. Biggest washout area is in the flows and checklists. Go in there and show them you want to be there, you know something about flying, and you can fly better than Commercial standards – they will likely offer you a class date that day.

If I am not mistaken, I think they have a base out of Arizona, but don't quote me on that. I have been doing some research on them, so me personally, I think that you have more than enough hours and experience to fly for them. Give it a shot, all they can say is "Your Total Time is not enough." Shoot for the Stars, you might hit the Moon.

Interview experience:
The interview has changed very little since the other gouges have been posted. I showed up 15 minutes before the interview started and was handed a paper packet of information about the company which included the famous 4 questions. About 20 minutes later, the head of training met me and took my logbooks, passport, licenses, and medical for copying. We then walked over to a classroom were the questioning proceeded. He asked questions about enroute charts (COP, MEA, MOCA, route distances) and approach plates (how to ID silex.....not the light gray arrow). Because of the position I was applying for, he then began a long line of questions regarding students I have had and how I helped them overcome their difficulties. He also asked how I would deal with various training scenarios. The sim ride soon followed where I took off from Ontario, left turn direct PDZ which was followed by a clearance for an ILS into Chino. Down to mins I went and then missed at DA. As I neared the holding fix, he asked me what entry I would use and that was the end. Throughout the interview, I asked a few questions regarding the company. He said their were only 5 lances left and then they would have a twin fleet only. Good luck to all of you and keep it safe!

I've got a ways to go until I get my numbers. As soon as I finish up my training and get some good instructing time, I'll be looking at Ameriflight pretty hard. Hope they're hiring in early '07. Sounds like things are going pretty well there so I may have a chance. Again, thanks for the help.
