Fedex pilots entering home streach??
Just returned from some much needed R&R. Boat load of emails from Fedex ALPA re: contract. Is it my imagination that our leadership and negotiating chairmen sounds, dare I say, almost positive?? The tone of these messages could be construed to be hopeful (positive ) that the light at the end of the tunnel is almost in sight. Anyone else read it that way??

It has been the goal from the beginning to achieve a contract that recognizes the contribution that we make to the Company's success. The four cornerstone issues will not be compromised, and one of them has yet to be even addressed - Scope.
While much has been accomplished, and it would appear that little is left to settle, the items that are left are, as Negotiating Committee Chairman Capt Chementi has said, money and emotion. It is possible that we could hammer through those sections and achieve a deal that we can support. It is more likely, in my opinion, that the Company will stonewall on these issues until they see a need to sign a contract. If that's the case, then we may have to play hardball.
While it is important to be prepared to exercise every option available to us, the union has not been trumpeting "strike, strike, strike, burn the place down" because that's not the goal. The goal is a Contract. However, we should be prepared in the near future to travel down one of those two paths - - voting on acceptable TA, or exercising self-help.
I believe the message is optimistic, but cautious, in order to give the Company every chance possible to negotiate in good faith. If the Company gets the idea that we're going to strike no matter what, they have no reason to negotiate at all. So, let the negotiating team do what they do, and be prepared to follow whichever course it leads us to. The crossroads may be close.

We are a long way from the home stretch. Our negotiations are based on four cornerstone issues: scope, retirement, scheduling, and health care. Go to the ALPA web site and look at which sections of our contract have NOT YET been TA'd and you'll find all four of our cornerstone issues missing from the list.
