If workers would have the guts and the willpower to exercise the power that they do have, you can always(almost anyway) do better than the "final last offer". I hope for the day that the folks that I work with would understand that.

How about this as well:
IRS withdraws tentative tax assessment for FedEx: Associated Press Business News: FDX - MSN Money
IRS has dropped the fine for 2002 (for now).

The difference between the Boeing workers(and most other union workers) and us airline pilots is they are under the NLRB instead of the RLA.
Under the NLRB your contract expires vice becoming ammendable. When your contract expires @ 23:59 lcl on the 30th both sides have a little more vested interest in getting a deal done rather than than dragging things out for 2 years under the RLA.
Under the RLA Airline Pilots must "be released from negotiations" by the NMB. In other words they need a note from Mom that says you can exercise your legal right to strike...........after a 30 day Time Out, which usually doesn't come until 2-3 years into negoatiations, if at all.
The NMB member panel consists of 3 people (I think), which are appointed by the sitting President.

Good news. I wonder how long the machinist negotiators went to school to become good negotiators. Oh, wait a second, I'll bet the International Association of Machinists isn't foolish enough to think one of their own could be trained to be an effective negotiator against Boeing's professional negotiators.
