Quite the opposite. This shows that competition is alive and well

Helped the deal how? More money for UPS or less?

As far as DHL International, they're here to stay. That's DHL's bread and butter and where they far exceed UPS and FedEx.
I agree Sky, the deal is dead from the people I have talked to (who spent the last 4.5 months on the hill) it is dead.

According to John Graber on the ABX Air Info Line dated October 16th, 2008 (today):

DHL and UPS

I’ve met recently with senior DHL domestic and international leaders. They understand our reliability, and it is important to them. They indicate that the UPS-DHL deal is still moving forward, but moving more slowly than they originally thought it would. Both sides are still working to complete a deal.

What is the difference between the UPS/DHL (read Deutche Post) and the FedEx/USPS deal? If the UPS/DHL deal gets deep sixed due to political influence, I expect an army of UPS lawyers filing protests over the FedEx/USPS deal.

Well, the USPS in Anti-trust exempt. They will have a hard time fighting that one.

My best friend is in lower level management with DHL. He is getting laid off in November. They have been told that over 90% of the US workforce will be laid off and DHL will essentially pull out of the US.

You can't run a business without a sales team.

It seems to me that DHL plans to close up shop in the USA, but they still want to offer service to US addresses.

RE18,

Sorry to hear that this debacle is going to affect your friend. A Question if you don't mind. Is your friend legacy DHL (pre-Deutche Post) or is legacy AirBorne Express? Is he working out of Plantation?
