IPA Foundation
I have a question to other Brown pilots about the IPA Foundation (for non-brownies – it’s a charitable foundation set up by our union).
According to the APC website there are 2945 line pilots and I’ve been told that some 650 or so have signed up so far. So only 22% or so of our guys/gals have signed up? …or is my math all wrong?
Is there something negative about the Foundation that I need to know about?
I’m really surprised because in the past I’ve found our pilots to be very generous toward new hires (paying for their food, etc on layovers) and they always seem to be collecting money for our pilots who might be battling cancer, etc… That kind of attitude is very inspiring to me. So why are so few signing up for the IPA Foundation?
Recently I overheard a very senior captain say that he didn’t want to contribute because he didn’t know the people the Foundation was helping? I think that’s very sad because after all this person would’ve had to retire, or go back to the panel by now if it wasn’t for this incredible lottery he won on December 13th of last year. So why not share just a very tiny portion of those enormous extra earnings he wasn’t planning on getting until December of last year? After all, we are talking a few dollars a month here….
I know numerous new-hires who signed up for the Foundation even while they’re getting $800 every two weeks during their first year here.
I hope I’m not stirring anything up here but I’m truly curious as to why the Foundation seems to be disregarded by so many of our pilots? Can some of you, more senior folks please explain…?
PS. If some of them didn’t know or forgot, I hope this thread will help...

I'm surprised that we have so many who haven't signed up. There's no reason why a captain shouldn't know what charities are recipients. There's articles in almost every issue of our union newspaper. And they don't just contribute to charities in Louisville.

Don't see why discussing the very same issue which is helping those in need shouldn’t be discussed here - a public forum?

They are open to contributing to any community we live in. C'mon dude, all they are asking for is 5 bucks a check to get some goodwill for our group.
