If We Are So Overmanned, How Come There Are Insufficient Reserves?

Well, six failed attempts to drop the trip and a call to crew scheds later (where I was flat-out told that both the right and left seats of the B727 are short-handed next week), I have no alternative but to operate the trip due to "Insufficient Reserves".
I guess the only thing I can do is contact my block rep and stress that contrary to the company's claims, the B727 does not realistically appear to be in excess and that our overall manning situation is not to the inflated extent alleged. I will urge my block rep to dubiously and critically view such claims from the company when it comes over to request a reduction in BLG, until such time that the company's claims of being overmanned actually match the company's actions in implementing the schedule.
Until then, lacking anything else concrete, I will have to rely on my own personal experiences in determining our manning (ISR denials, flying regularly on reserve, leveling over 80% without being on "First-Fly", etc. - my perception is my reality!). Hell, I was just told by a crew scheduler that we are under-manned afterall!

Starting in April, I have gotten ISR on several occasions whe I tried to move or drop R-Days.
In the last two months, on two different trips, I have gotten the ISR when I tried to swap an overnight for an O&B. Called CRS, was told that it means that there are not enough reserves to cover the overnight trip that I was trying to drop.

FWIW, just put in two requests to move R days - 1 day and a block of 5 days in August. Both approved.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that while they are denying all the requests to drop R-days the company is asking us Captains to try and save them $100 per flight. OK, so I can't give them back a whole day of pay (or more) but they want me to save a hundred bucks. All while reserve pilots are sitting at home collecting full RLG and flying only a few days a month. And get this, there are still carryover reserve lines! If you're senior enough you can be paid for 20+ days a month and only fly a few days. Now that will save some money.
What a bunch of crap. If I didn't know better I would think that they are doing this just to **** us off (but that would give them way too much credit).
Cheers, Gator
PS. I'm going for 500+ requests before I actually have to go sit the
R-days!
