I use skype with my laptop for most calls, it is just nice to have a portable version sometimes....
Or, if you go to SIN, they will have free nationwide wifi soon. Walk around anywhere and be connected.

Default will it work without "paying"

with the new iphone (or the original with the new software update) is it possible now to have your iphone on overseas and NOT rack up roaming charges? (i know it was an eye opener for some initially)

i.e. i like to have my international phone on, but when a call comes in, i just hit ignore and skype them. costs me no money whatsoever, and i am in touch with the wife just in case of emergency.

so......, does the new iphone software allow this?

I use it frequently to chat with my kid when I'm on the road, but I'm just a domestic kind of guy. No experience using it when across either pond.

Works fine, as does Skype video chat as well!

Yes, you can turn the Data Roaming off so you wont rack up the international data roaming charges...then, when you find a wifi hotspot, you can still download all your email and surf for free.

Supposedly Truphone allows you to receive a call on a network and then switch the call to a wifi network in mid conversation, thus saving big bucks on international network roaming. If/when the full version of Skype hits the iPhone they will surely include this nifty feature too.

Yes, I use iChat for video conferencing all the time. In some of our more exotic locales with wifi, I have initiated a video chat with the wife & kids back home and walked around with my laptop giving them the nickel tour of the place. I don't recommend this procedure for the single guys as the local chicks don't really find this too attractive.

I was able to sit at the bar in Traben Traben(Hahn) and surf the net over the hotel's WIFI at no cost to me. This was done with the old IPhone. I did the same thing when someone called me there, I would see who it was with caller ID and then skype them from my computer. I am very intersted to try Skype with my new IPhone.

More importantly, what beer choices will I have when buying beers for my FO and RFO on my layover there next weekend?!

The hotel has pils and both hefe and dunkle weizen. the best part is that it is 2 to 3 euros for a beer. One of the best beer deals in Europe. Nice quiet layover. The rooms in the main building are a little noisey and get warm in the mornings. The out buildings are the way to go.
