FDX - Pilot Seniority# vs Engineer Seniority# - What/Why the Difference?
Just perusing the Master Seniority List and noticed that of our 4,766 pilots listed, the vast majority of the top 671 pilots listed have a significant difference between their Pilot Seniority #s and their Engineer Seniority #s.
Couple of questions:
Why are there two sets of seniority #s?
What's the difference?
Why is there such a broad range of differences the top 671 #s?
(...note, for everyone below #671 the two seniority #s are the same....for those before, some are different by only 1 or 2 #s, while others are significantly different)
Thanks in advance for the insight.

As I understand it, some of those guys were hired as PFE's but were allowed or had the opportunity to get trained as pilots courteousy of FTL.
I am sure a Former Tiger Pilot will chime in with the straight scoop

Tigers/Seaboard had two stripers. Their senority had to be kept separate. So there were two lists made. One with only the pilots and another list with everyone including the PFEs.
Not sure when the last one left, but I swear I saw a guy with two stripes about 12 years ago.

Still have 2 PFEs left over from the Seaboard/Flying Tigers mergers. They are both in their mid 70s, have 97XXX employee numbers and are the top 2 on the 727 S/O list on posting 08-02 (DC-10 excess). It'll be interesting if they, or how many others , will actually go to the 727 back seat vice retire. Had a 65 yr old friend tell me he will continue to plumb on the 10 until his 727 class date then retire. Sounds reasonable.

Flying Tigers had one seniority list after they intergrated the PFEs on the pilot seniority list in around 1965-66. Prior to that time they did have PFEs. Those PFEs were given pilot numbers below all pilots off probation, but ahead of those still on probation. The PFEs retained seniority above pilots for the FE seat.
Seaboard World had two lists at the time of the Tiger merger. Pilots represented by ALPA and PFEs represented by the IBT. I recall that the PFEs at Seaboard did get to wear three stripes but the S/Os at Tigers still wore two.
The Seaboard PFEs settled for DOH for the FE seat and behind the last Tiger pilot for pilot bidding rights. The Arbitrator used a ratio for the Tiger and Seaboard pilots and gave the Seaboard pilots FE bidding rights behind the last Tiger pilot.
