FDX - Pilot Seniority# vs Engineer Seniority# - What/Why the Difference?

PT that FH spoke of was not on the FDX Seniority List.
He was a former professional Ground instructor from Continental and worked in FDX Air Navigation dept.
He retired a few years ago when FDX offered early retirement incentives to many Non-pilot employees.
I never really understood his position, Check authority as he was not a Pilot or even a qualified S/O or on our List, but he would ride along giving INTL route Checks on the DC-10 and 727 and would wear a Uniform (with 2 Stripes).
That was before our first contract.

The guy you saw 10 years ago was PT, a Navigator that on occasion would go on a trip in regard to new routes.
Flying Tigers had one seniority list after they intergrated the PFEs on the pilot seniority list in around 1965-66. Prior to that time they did have PFEs. Those PFEs were given pilot numbers below all pilots off probation, but ahead of those still on probation. The PFEs retained seniority above pilots for the FE seat.
Seaboard World had two lists at the time of the Tiger merger. Pilots represented by ALPA and PFEs represented by the IBT. I recall that the PFEs at Seaboard did get to wear three stripes but the S/Os at Tigers still wore two.
The Seaboard PFEs settled for DOH for the FE seat and behind the last Tiger pilot for pilot bidding rights. The Arbitrator used a ratio for the Tiger and Seaboard pilots and gave the Seaboard pilots FE bidding rights behind the last Tiger pilot.
