I was thinking that we could be able to turn this lemon into lemonade...
This is the 1st time that we will be going into negotiations with a p!ssed off and (somewhat)educated crewforce. The only problem is, we are not channeling our anger in the right direction.
As some have pointed out here, not all of the overmanning is caused by the ND's and their return. And even if it was, there's nothing that can be done about it. I don't like it, either. But, it's the law. Management is the one putting out excess bids. They're the ones controlling who goes where and when. The union's job is only to make sure they do it within the CBA.
We should be channeling this motivation on fixing our contract, scheduling, deadheading, retirement at 60, FDAs, pay rates(of course) and all the loopholes that can make it such a grind around here, sometimes.
DW, will be not be the MEC Chair, come next spring.
Let's move on to the real challenge, Contract 2010. With a motivated crewforce, maybe we can negotiate a contract that actually deserves a 95% "yes" vote.

FedEx is not hemorrhaging money. We just aren't making as much as we would like, and the economic uncertainty has mgt taking a defensive posture.
But, if FedEx can give the shareholders a 10% raise in a very trying economic climate, they can certainly pony up some extra $$ for us

even support for DW
We do need to become Re-United but DW has to get out of the circle for many us us to believe in that circle (of trust, that is).
Short story:
I went to one of those Prater "Takin it in the @ss" Road Shows and the ENTIRE time a group of OUR Union Reps sat in the back eating, joking before the break. But since I sat in the back, I had to chance to overhear many of thier smoking and joking comments. When ever anyone would ask a question, they would belittle/criticize them to each other and talk about how they don't get it, yada, yada.. They don't truly want us EDUCATED; they want us to know what THEY want us to know.. "Guys you can now bid for training; sure you might lose all your R days but hey you can make it up (CIC), senority dependent, of course." We are sheep and they are here to herd us.

Sorry no lemonade from lemons here. The FEDEX MEC will never have my trust. The only way to restore it is for the ENTIRE MEC to resign. With the exception of the ones elected after the contract and age 60 issue.
Don't expect a united crew force for the next contract. The MEC has shown their cards and it's all about the top 10% not the other 90%. So the bottom 90% ... it's every man for himself.

Actually MD10PLT, I felt about like you did in March. Then I saw the committment of the MEC...including the most senior block reps...to make sure that we did everything we could to protect the junior guys in a downturn. I've seen some of the letters they have sent to their constituents when those folks complained about BLG reductions, etc., and I have to say that I have been impressed with the committment to stick together.
Busboy's comment above is spot on IMHO. Its okay to be mad...I'm mad too at times. But its what we do next that counts...
I can't fix the age 60 change or the LOA shortfalls. But I am committed to staying engaged and doing all I can on the issues we'll face the next couple years...including the 2010 contract.

ALBIE, I really want to trust the union and I'm sure you've read other post of mine where I said I think the union does a lot of good things, but I don't buy the argument this is being caused by the company or the economy.
This is being caused by an over manning situation that was caused by the union. Don't forget the manning efficiencies negotiated in the last contract, like training on days off, lack of hard scheduling parameters, the scheduling committee tried to get in and was squashed by the MEC. And of course "Retro". Every one of these were put in place to get a few good things, like better health care for retirees. Give me a break, you're telling me a guy with 25 years at FEDEX can't afford to take care of himself for 5 years.

some valid points ... correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the first contract focused the obra bridge for the older guys, then we got the veba to help the older guys for their retirement... now we're at it again with the old guys.. when do we take care of our young? ( can we call them the silent majority?)
flame away fellow old guys...
