Default FDX - FEX written results?

Here's an interesting bit to ponder.

I was hired at FedEx as a 727 FO. I do not have a flight engineer rating.

When I was hired, FedEx wanted a FEX written exam passed within the preceding 24 months. There is a waiver from the FAA that allows you to use the results past 24 months to take a practical test as long as you have been continuously employed by a 121 carrier. FedEx didn't want to use this waiver on new hires. I am not sure if they were unable or simply unwilling.

When I get excessed from 727 FO to 727 SO, will I be able to use my FEX written results from 2005?

As if a pay cut and training aren't enough, I would hate to take that FEX written again!!

Call 727/SO Stds office and ask.

You know you're not the only one this affects --- by my count about 108 guys total --- which include the MD-11/FO Purple Nuggets from ANC and the MEM-727/FO seats --- less those who buck up and bid HKG, of course.

Just don't take it and stay in your current seat...

d. If a pilot receives an award but does not possess the requisite certifications as described in Section 24.A.3.a., A.3.b. or A.3.c. (above), he may be removed from that award and, if removed, shall remain in his current crew position. A crew position which becomes vacant as a result of application of this paragraph shall be addressed as provided in Section 24.C.7. (below).

I always thought the Purple Nuggets really scored a good deal when they got hired. Getting to go straight to the right seat of the -11 without having to take the requisite tour through the worst seat at the company was a definite bonus. As a new hire, I remember thinking to myself one night as I preflighted the jet for the forth time on my a.m. hub turn, "I wonder if I can get my old job back at that kennel scooping dog poop." I did that when I was twelve and I thought I would rather be doing that at the time.
But honestly, for any of us whining about whether we are going to have to commute or just move back to an F/O seat or whatever, I feel the pain for the guys that are going to have to go back to plumbing on the Boeing. Or even worse, having to re-start their careers as an engineer on that thing. I just hope the training program for the engineers has lightened up some.

I can't imagine having to retake the FE written just to take a pay cut and move to the back of the slave ship.

Posting 08-04

All F/O's who have been excessed but do not possess an F/E practical and/or possess an expired F/E written can now chose any aircraft that their seniority can hold, except their current position or any SO position.

Practice Bids 18 Jun 08, 25 Jun 08. Bid closes 28 Jun 08.

Default Not so fast....

8. A pilot released from his award as described in Section 24.C.7., (above), shall remain in his current crew position. If his current crew position is unavailable for reasons identified in Section 11.I.2.f. (Training), his crew position shall be determined as provided in Section 11.I.2.g.

11.I.2.f...
f. If, due to a withdrawal or removal from training, a pilot would otherwise return to his current crew position but is unable to do so because the position is unavailable for one of the following reasons, his situation shall be addressed as provided in Section 11.I.2.g. A pilot's current crew position is unavailable if:
  1. between the closing date of the bid on which he was awarded the position for which he is training and the date on which he would otherwise return to his current crew position, a more senior pilot has been involuntarily excessed from the current crew position of the pilot in training; or
11.I.2.g...
g. If a pilot is unable to return to his current crew position because that position is unavailable as provided in Section 11.I.2.f. (above), the following shall apply:
  1. he shall be awarded a crew position in the same crew status as his most recent crew position consistent with his updated standing bid preference, provided he has sufficient seniority to hold that position; or
  2. if he is unable to designate a crew position in accordance with Section 11.I.2.g.i (above), he shall be awarded a crew position based upon his seniority and his updated standing bid preference; or
  3. if his seniority does not enable him to hold a crew position under Section 11.I.2.g.i or 11.I.2.g.ii. (above), his employment status shall be determined by the Vice President, Flight Operations, consistent with the seniority and qualifications of the affected pilot.
I think these would cover a new hire FO in his current situation, you don't necessarily go back to your previous seat, at least the way I read it...

Better make that number 107 since I already have my FE ticket from doing the "protect essential" thing in a previous life.

Talking

If I recall correctly...1-800-ALL-ATPS had a $299 one-day course, which included the test cost.

...oh yeah, and the $12 for the 3 large Starbucks you'll need to stare at the 500+ questions on the computer that day.

...come join the club --- it's great back here.

...and hey --- you'll be senior!
