With the addition of UPS domicile, cutbacks in Alaska Airlines capacity, optimized schedules at ANC, etc.,---and now losing seat positions due to excess (not to mention all the new FDX commuters that are potentially coming) that DIME has become "unaffordable" for me.
Bidding back to NB in MEM. Will be a wash in pay (approx), but a heck of a lot less tylenol. (also more days off---vitally important to me).
Wishing I were in the top 10!!!!!!!

1. Parking---yes, free at Fedex. Need an "alaskaized" car in winter however, or you may be looking at a dead car on each commute.
2. Yes. Used Elmendorf only. Space A --- Have to check each day. DV quarters (if you are/were O-6 and above -- call protocol) are almost always available (for any o-6's reading this; they've never been full any time I've tried to use them)

And for me, that DIME kept getting bigger and bigger--even though I was gaining seniority and nuggets etc were coming in behind me.

I have been a commuter for 7+ years now and I have seen it get harder and harder. I stay because I like the guys up here and hate MEM. Now that I am losing my seat (capt) I have to think about going back to MEM and it is killing me. If I stay in ANC as a FO I will be number 6 and that will help alot. FR8Hauler is right about sucking up the DH's as a sr guy. Also, if you don't live on the west coast, the dh's out of here will not cover you bank to get to the far east. I live outside of PDX and have the same problem with some of the MEM dh's and that is a factor for me.
Good luck guys

Being senior in MEM is the way to go. The ONLY reason I will stay after being downgraded to FO in ANC is because I bought a place up there recently and don't want to get nailed on capital gains tax selling it and going through the hassle of putting it on the market after spending a bunch of money fixing it up.

I've been reading the above posts on ANC and I'll throw my .02 into the fray.
There has not been one month that I haven't paid to get my way to work and while I knew that was the cost of doing business when I bid up here, I didn't think it would be a big deal. At the midpoint on the list, I can hold a two commute line, although I can get very little bank to go along to help with everything else. Getting up and back is costing $1000/month, not to mention what the others have said about no jumpseat protection and the extra days that you have to prog out. We've got guys up here that commute from Florida and they tack on atleast an extra 4-5 days per month with their commutes. When you roll in the dollar cost to the equation, I should have stayed in Memphis and if I get bounced to Narrowbody, the pay difference won't actually be all that different considering the outlays I'm putting out now (crashpad, airline tix, etc.).
When you factor in all the money and time, I'm not sure it's actually worth it. Had I gone to the Airbus in Memphis, I'd be holding the same types of lines (week on, week off generally) and had that much more time at home. Maybe a tad less money due to the international override.
I guess my point is that you hear all about the pain of ANC and most of it is true. I just thought incorrectly that I could hack my way through it and it wouldn't be that bad. Commuting from the west coast has been tougher than I thought and I'll give more serious consideration to bidding ANC again the next time around.
FWIW and best of luck to everyone,
Wildmanny
