HVY,
Okay, maybe I'm a little slow but what did you expect? Are we in this together? No, we aren't. This entire airline profession is like a huge brotherhood which should not be confused for business acumen by one companies management over any others.
Do you get ****ed at SWA pilots because the price their company charges for tickets is going to most likely help put a legacy or two in the grave this year? While we all get along on layovers, jumpseating or in any other social setting DO NOT FORGET that companies are at war (SWA is winning due to very savy fuel hedging amoung other things).
I'm an ex UAL pilot who gave up 10+ years of seniority last year to go Brown. I don't hate or even dislike the union leadership at SWA / Brand X because their company is driving others out of business. It's war between companies, nothing more nothing less.
No, I'm not a heartless bastard and feel for anyone who loses or is about to lose a job. Nor is anyone else with a shred of decency regardless of airline. We all made our choices based on the best data we had, or job offers, location or whatever. We ALL feel bad when one company goes under. I personally wrote 13 letters of rec (12 successful) for guys at UAL and think they are on some very thin ice due to the price of fuel.
Hell, I saw the writing on the wall (job security wise) and walked the walk. Going Brown is personally costing me a tremendous amount of money over the first several years here but it's the long run that one must focus on and strive to protect.
No one on here is rejoicing at your companies straits or your personal position.

Thanks to all UPS'ers for your kind words. I have friends at UPS who have all mirrored your words. As I sit here in dismay I can't help but think about how tough this is going to be for me and my family. We have built a good life around Astar and the good pay and benefits it provided. I provided years of service and dedication to Astar/DHL and it served me well until yesterday. Our loss of high paying jobs is a huge loss for the industry as a whole and it sickens me to think what DHL is capable of. Be wary of the devil because the devil is DHL. They are a huge company, arrogant, unforgiving and merciless on their employees. I am glad to be free of them finally. For those of you unfamiliar with their business tactics, it may be advantageous for you to educate yourselves. Working for such a lying, cheating, back stabbing company always sickened me anyway. I wish now for their total demise and it will happen one day. What goes around comes around. But for now, its off to somewhere else.
This will be the second time that I will be furloughed with ABX AIR and it would appear permenately. I think UPS needs to turn down the offer from DHL (I dought they really need what little frieght we haul anyway) and let DHL die on the vine. Lets get the bastards out of the US permenately. They have ruined two airlines.....one airport, if not more.....thouands of jobs.....and more than likely a few lives....for what? It wont be worth it UPS tell them to take a hike.

Ultradrvr: We are sorry for the fact that UPS and DHL made a business decision that may impact your job and whole life for that matter. Talking to my fellow UPSers, all would like to see preferential hiring for the Astar and Abex pilots that are out of a job because of it. I am sure that if and when we start hiring again that issue will be a topic that the IPA will put forward to UPS. Please do keep in mind that like DHL, UPS are the 1000 lb gorilla in the room and have never hired anyone (or did anything for that matter) it didn't want to regardless of what the IPA suggests. Simply telling UPS we're not flying it would be a breach of contract and isn't feasable.

I don't want to sound greedy, but:
I would prefer UPS to drain the pool entirely, and I mean everyone, before they start preferential interviews for anyone else. If they start "normal" hiring, then that is a fine grey line as I understand it's not a first in first out system. But if the furloughed ABX/Astar guys get to go to the top of the list, I would be disappointed in brown for not treating the poolies better. But as a poolie, I have no real voice in the matter.

Who are we kidding
UPS can & will find a way to move the extra DHL cargo without the need for additional IPA crewmembers. Do we really think this ultra-conservative company is willing to rush out to hire more pilots and acquire more airframes while the domestic cargo market receeds ?
They probably already know how to add a leg and a few cans to an existing flight to move the freight. And that is the small amount that can't be moved by ground transportation (trucks, trains, cars, bikes & skateboards)
BESIDES ... I've only been at the bottom of the list for a year. And I normally spend at least 5 years as a bottom feeder until things pick up wherever I have been ... it just ain't that time yet !
But IF we do hire ... rest assured that both rescued poolies AND/OR former DHL contractors will be welcomed by me and a cold beverage on their first trip !
Because someone's road here is the LEAST of my concerns ... seriously.
Later,
Brown CC

It was just a openended statment or perhaps a slight rant aimed more for the company as a whole and not just the pilots. I still think its a good idea. No poolie should have to tread water while I step in ahead of them (like thats gonna happen anyway) I hope UPS takes care of thier own first. Its not their fault. I wonder what Sienfeld would like his union to spend their time on?? Its all relative I guess. Just curious.
