FDX - Expletives and Unity
Pilots can "jawbone" unity all they want and it will not do any good. The current pilot compensation system incentivizes individualism and disunity, and all of the "expletive filled diatribes" in the world will not change that. Pilots fly DP's and overtime and sell back vacation because it works for them. In some cases it is greed but for many it is a genuine attempt to make an unbearable system more "fair."
Flying DPs is economically no different than voting to get rid of one's union "brothers" because of their age. When pilots (junior pilots, in the case of Age 60) see the system as unfair, they will move to correct it through whatever means is available. When a pilot (of any age) sees a DP trip that he perceives as more palatable than that which he is dealt on his monthly bid line, he will take it.
Just when you think the forces that create disunity cannot get any worse, the union comes up with a new one: Rather than attempting to solve the underlying health care cost problem and making things fair for all, the union agrees to a gerryrigged system for retirees that favors older pilots and might well mean the end of health care coverage for the younger pilots when they retire. This short term, divisive thinking is clearly why "Labor is in a death spiral...."
Expletive filled diatribes go only to our lack of professionalism and, just like Agency Shop, are a sign of weakness and frustration. Internal disunity among pilots has nothing to do with the company. It is caused by the pilots, themselves, and it will never be eliminated until economic reality is injected into the way they value and compensate each other.

He's like the kid at school with the "kick me" sign on his shirt all day who shows up the next day in the same shirt with the same sign. With apologies to the Red Neck Comedy Tour, ......Bobbie, "here's your sign".

I've said this before on this board - management is probably sitting back in their comfortable conference chairs and laughing out loud at the antics and frustrations of this pilot group. It seems to have the upper hand in everything right now. And that ain't right.
