System should be fair?
I see why you have the reputation that you have.
Maybe you missed it. I am a commuter and do not want to sit reserve in MEM. The system should be fair to all, not just those that live in MEM. And, maybe we should live within our means and stop working 25 days out of 30. AH

I had a trip dropped due to a 1 -7. Didn't realize that when you started at 7pm, it counted as an entire day, but alas, now I know when you are not on Reserve, the "24 hours off" is a calendar day. We all know when you are on Reseve, "24 hours off" literally means 24 hours off at the Scheduler's whim.....I digress.
Went into the View Add, asked for 8 different trips; received one. Guess what? Still below monthly guarantee. So, if we are throwing ideas out, how about trying to bring line-holders up to guarantee when trips are dropped due to legality issues?
It is disheartening to see a 4 week bid-month and guys on reserve, with CIC, holding 86 - 90 hours, while a line-holder suffers below guarantee. Guess it is my own fault, I can hold reserve w/ c/o, but I do not live in MEM and bidding reserve doesn't make a lot of sense (until now).

What I don't understand is why does the company still build so many reserve lines with carryover if the reserve utilization is so low? What advantage is there for them to pay guys to sit around for an extra 8 days if they're not going to use them?

As long as there are carryover trips there will be carryover reserve.

Major: That wasn't supposed to be a dig at you, I'm just saying that if those lines are such a great deal, then they would be going senior. I don't think the company is going to change the system to accommodate commuters. I personally don't think its worth being on reserve to get the extra bucks, even if they didn't use me too often, so I don't begrudge other pilots for taking advantage of the system for their benefit. I do agree with the idea of splitting the windows or making the reserves only able to pick up more reserve days instead of cherry trips. Both those options sound very reasonable to me.

I hope that by your 3 smiley faces that you are joking. Reserves have always gotten the shaft when it comes to pay. If we got swept into an airport and you are on your "line" and I am on reserve, even though it is now my line too, I don't get any extra pay like you will. I won't get any overage pay if on reserve.
The fact that reserves get first choice in CIC is odd. But just like substitution, it can turn the most senior guy into anything the company wants. Do I take advantage of it, of course. But I would bet that you take advantage of any contractual "advantage " you have too. Do I feel I'm screwing other pilots, no way! I'm senior to more than half of our pilots. Not a stab, or brag (big friggin deal). But I choose to live in MEM for the quality of life (easy working cond.), and I bid reserve. I figure that if I get and extra 4 days off a month, I've won the game. Yet to do this, I put up with the crappy trips you don't want to fly, and I get paid less to do it. So please don't condemn all the people who either choose to fly reserve or can't hold anything but it and say you want to screw them on the next contract just because you can't live in the mountains and get your double deadheads too. If you don't like it, bid something besides VTO. It's always been a crap shoot anyway.

Seniority = choosing only 1 good deal!
All you A-300 F/Os senior to me (90%) please bid RA, R24 & RB in that order. Or upgrade. Or have an adventure at an FDA. Once that happens, I'll happily settle for any of your good regular lines that are left!

Loook....
You are only forced to be junior once. After that it is completely up to you!
Nobody is forcing anybody to be a commuter or live in memphis...It's your choice.
I lived in Memphis for 5yrs and did the reserve carryover thing.
I decide to get a life.
Now I'm a commuter, and don't get that good deal!
Life is Good!
My choice.
Make yours... and live with it.
