As much as I dislike DW. There is no conspiracy theory here.
The company could give a rats but about the age 60 guys.
All they care about is the bottom line. Canx the bid was the most cost effective way for the company.
They didn't canx the FDAs because they didn't want anyone backing out.
A one way trap so speak.
Again, goes to the bottom line!

I agree. The bid canx was the quickest way to move the over 60 S/Os out of the most overmaned seat. Infact, they practically filled all of the F/O seats on the latest practice. The company also benefits with this because in future excess bids, those over 60ers that went to F/O seats won't have the opportunity to use the 'extra' benefit of the excess bid to make it back to the Capt seat.

They still have less than half of the HKG FO seats filled. 17 out of 44 by my count.

Ohh well, at least we're hiring ground instructors. Maybe 27 of them would be willing to reduce their 3 year tour in exchange for going to HKG. On first year pay. At least they can live in CAN, where the cost of living is substantially less and where they won't have to sit through a 4 + hour van ride for 1.5 hours of pay.
Ohh wait, the company is saying "We don't actually know if you can live in CAN, we'll let you know after you bid it."
This just keeps getting better.

The most cost effective thing for the company to do is overman the seats that coat the least, ie the SO seat. Keep diong vacancy bids until you get people to bid Paris and HK, and don't excess. It wouldn't take very long for the over 60 guys to decide to retire if they knew that all they would be able to do is sit reserve in mem or go to HK

And, as you said, be more cost effective overall for a little while. Much better to have a S/O seat overmanned than a widebody Capt. seat.

No, I didn't. We are losing at least 40 over 60 SOs in this bid, maybe more. SO LCAs are moving on too.
Where are we going to excess 727 SOs to? 38 junior ones already want to go to the DC10.
When we go from 90 to 79 727s, we will have too many FOs. Some of the LCA CAs will move in between bids and may prevent an excess in the CA seat.
