Default Actual First Year Pay

This great unknown is a driving force in my decision to apply or not. The APC "airline profiles" section has been the single best source for getting an idea of what we can expect next to getting it strait from the source. I would ask the guys cashing the check to chime in for their carrier. My guess is I'm not the only one wanting more out of our career. We just would like some actual numbers.
Thanks in advance, and very special thanks to APC. You've done a really good thing here.
Me, well I'm a RJ driver,for some TIME now, B747 want-a-be.

Not sure if you want to apply to a cargo outfit or pax? At FDX 1st year pay for s/o is $54/hr as APC states. Not sure what training pay is now. 12 years ago it was $2000/month. Pay is based on 4 week bid months (28 days) and 5 week bid months (35 days). This year we have 7 four week bid periods (min. credit hrs 68x7mos=476 hrs) and 5 five week bid periods (min. credit hrs 85x5mos=425). Total 901 credit hours min. for the year ($48k). Some lines pay more and you need to add per diem. Your out of luck at FDX if you want to fly the Whale, but I hear at UPS you can make 747-400 Captain in ANC at the 6-7 yr point.

Thanks Canyonman,
Breaking down the red tape and giving us the "W2" earnings. For me its a matter of what can I expect first year, and then figure out how I'm going to make up the difference. Cargo or Pax? I would like to move over to cargo. Thanks for the information. Keep it comming guys/gals.

I would give you UPS numbers, but things have changed in the last 3 years since I've been hired. Also, what I make can be totally different from what you make. I didn't fly any open time whatsoever. I never broke our monthly guarantee. However, others in my class are in the Z domicile (int'l) and they made much more than I. Why? Int'l override, perdiem differences, higher monthly guarantees, etc. So, if I was to give you a number, it wouldn't mean squat.

However, what I can tell you is if you can get on at UPS, and this is where you want to be, you will find a way to cope and deal with first year pay. First year pay sucks - plain and simple. You will make up for it and then some when you get to 2nd year pay. Please understand, though, that chances are pretty darn good that if you were to get hired on at UPS, being ANC-based is an almost certainty. This, to me, is a bigger player than first year pay issues.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do. It is tough to move from a stable job to start all over again. Do your research, keep talking to fellow pilots, and you'll come up with a decision that you can live with. After all, this is just a job. Your family comes first.

Thanks 1800 RVR,
Lots of truth in your reply. "Your family comes first." I guess its like a weight & balance problem. Life, family vs. career, goals; Don't let it get too far out or I might just loose it all.

FWIW ... after 10 months at UPS in 2007, my GROSS earnings including all per diem, intl override, etc was ...

$32,500

So I would expect that if I had started Jan 1, 2007 ... the gross would have been approx

$39,000

Also FWIW ... that is training pay March - July (slow learner and/or backed-up school house), and then 1st year rates as a SDFZ on reserve with ABSOLUTELY no overtime, JA Pay, extension pay ... in other words, no extras.

And the JA calls (overtime requests) come and go, with as few as ZERO lately, OR 2-4 in the late summer and early fall time frame. So there are opportunities to make more dinero for those that desire ... or are REALLY, REALLY desperate, and possibly foolish.

As always ... YMMV

Did you think accepting a JA call on 1st year pay is worth it?

DUH ... Obviously NOT for me !

You were joking tight ...

I think there were a few in my class that considered it for a few seconds ... that's how long it took to explain the math to them !
