Default FDX: Who says you can't commute to CDG???

Purple Bros:

I know this has been talked about before, but one of the show stoppers for me bidding CDG B757 FO (besides the inadequate housing allowance, no school voucher, US dollar tanking, no assurance of when I can bid back, etc) is the supposed requirement to live in base.

I mean, why must you live in base? Says who? If you bid reserve, will you not be on for six days at a time, will you not work the same number of days as you do in MEM/LAX/ANC, etc.? Can you not bid and trip trade to make your schedule commutable?

I normally wouldn't consider bidding such a crappy deal as this LOA, but I'm 40, I'd like to be out of here by 60 (or earlier) and 5-6 more years on the panel won't help that mission.

The bottom line is: Can the company MAKE you live somewhere? They don't make me live in MEM (thank God).

Fred

You do not need to live in Paris...but do you want access to the $1,700 USD housing allowance? Access to the $10,000. assistance for "seed" money and the add'l $10,000. assistance for rental deposit?

If not, take one of the other options and live in the USA.

The requirement to live within 100 NM of base stems from the FDA LOA and the choices for the said move package. Do not need/want a move package? Then commute to Paris.

"100 mile limit. The intent was to have pilots live in their domicile. The 100 mile limit can be stretched a bit but not to require flying into domicile. High speed train is feasible. Individual situations will have to be considered by the SCP. "

"Commuting. The intent was to discourage commuting. Small bases require pilots in domicile to draw from. The anticipated Paris flight schedule will not facilitate commuting to the U.S. If you commute you are restricted from the monthly allowances since they require residence in domicile. There are no crash-pad moves in the enhanced option. There is a crash pad move in the section 6 move package but no tax equalization unless the LOA is passed."

Both quotes were taken from the LOA information page on PFC. Not sure how tax equalization will work if you don't live there but you are required to use it.

Taxes would be fun. By accepting the assignment you also commit to the Tax Equalization scheme and Price Waterhouse as your accountant. Who knows how that would work if you aren't really an Ex Pat. My guess fred would still pay french taxes but would not get your FIE. Would PWC let you keep all your US exemptions? Who knows, certainly not our buddies at ALPA.

I think regardless of which package you pick, you will be subject to tax equalization. That part is not optional.

If you get your insurance through FDX, you'll have to take the international option plan. This is a huge bummer for the US commuter with a family, because it only pays 75% stateside vs. 100% international.

You don't get your FIE anyway under equalization, Fred pockets that. If you choose to stay in the US and commute, your taxes would be no different than if you lived in CDG.

BGY, that is what I said, I think fred would not get your FIE because you are not an expat. As to your taxes beng the same as if you ived in Paris, I see a lot of lawsuits in the future if you pay taxes as if you live in Paris if but actually live in the land of the big BX. If my take home is less after PWC computes my taxes than if turbo tax does them I would be pis*ed.

This is just another example how those that negotiated this crap have no idea; before and after the approval of the LOA!
