FDX: Carryover, should we have it.
Lot's of discussion lately on the possibility of the BLG being lowered, that's not the topic of this thread.
What I'd like to hear is the carryover issue. Do we need it? Is it being used to get lot's of hours flown for straight time? How many more crews would we need if there wasn't any carryover? Is it a fair system?
What questions does it raise in your mind.
rage on fella's.

Yes --- at straight time.
Approx Additional crews = Add up total in bidback and divide by BLG. # of crews they are saving for the next month.
Fair? Normal times --- yes. In the CBA. Needs to be eliminated/severly reduced before we even think about reducing BLG.
IMHO of course....

Let me get this straight.
PC likes to man the seats so the average line is right on min BLG then wants us to eat the extra hours of pay because he miscalculated? I don't think so.
I call an academic situation. He needs to go look at the red card.

I think there should be a clause in the CBA that if we reduce the BLG below the mininmum, we should have a trigger that shifts the max BLG to a number within 10 or so of the min. If someone bids a line that has carryover he knows that trips will be dropped to get to the Max. If it is one long trip then he gets paid the max BLG and the rest goes into a bank that he can use to raise his BLG to the max in the future. It doesn't make any sense for the BLG to be reduced while guys senior enough are getting 30 or 40 hours over the Avg BLG due to carryover or CIA.

Leave it like it is for guys on Reserve. Makes living in MEM bearable. Get rid of carryover and/or cap BLG and those on Reserve get paid much less and get called much more.
Real problem would be if BLG was lowered and we sat Reserve for 3 hours pay and get used all the time.

You can't keep the res carryover and get rid of regular carryover. Just isn't fair, and I wouldn't be able to hold it.....

Most if not all airlines have carryover trips. They're necessary so the same trips can be flown any day of the month. But where other airline pilots may have 2 days of carryover because they have 3-day trips, we have 12 days of carryover because we have 13-day trips.
The problem is not the existence of carryover, but the rules that allow us to use carryover to pad our BLGs.
DW mentioned the other night that we need to start thinking about a cap-and-bank system. That means straight time would be limited to a certain amount, and any straight time over the cap (e.g. carryover) goes into a bank (presumably for dropping trips later, etc.). Draft and volunteer would still pay 1.5X.
DW said the last time he tried to advance that idea, the pitchforks started clanking....
After we go through whatever lies ahead in the next couple of years, I predict we'll be more receptive to the idea for the next contract.
