It is the same situation, if a more senior Capt bids an RFO line, once they step into the cockpit, they are the RFO, not the Capt. If they want to be the Capt, bid the Capt line.
Didn't ALPA win that one in a grievance? Seems to me they decided that the Senior Captain on the flight was the Captain of record.

Don't know. But it wouldn't be the first time that the union was on the wrong side of an opinion.

If that's true, then it contradicts the FOM, which says the PIC is the captain on the full pairing in the bidpack.

If you want to attack me, I bid the left seat at 80%. If that's not good enough for you or Jack L, I think "you should quit here "and go be on medical leave at some other airline.

Man...this smacks of defensiveness. You don't need to justify your decisions to us, particularly in a way that paints everyone who doesn't make your choice somehow unenlightened and self-centered. "Not upgrading works for me" would be a lot more convincing argument.

By the way, I placed my family above my ego and moved to (God Forbid) Memphis and bid reserve instead of fulfilling my desires to race sailboats fulltime. I stayed a F/O while they weren't using me much even though I could hold Captain, because it would have been a pay cut considering the marginal hour of work. When they started touching every R-day, I upgraded and don't work so much again. I would love to be an FO on a WB, commuting, but I tried it, and it didn't work for me and my family dynamic.

I guess I could take my own advice and just say "Being a junior Capt in Domicile works for me"....hope you find something that "Works for you", to the point you don't feel the need to rationalize your decision to those that have made others.

American is the only major airline that I am aware that has an up or out upgrade policy. The rest are just like FedEx and people do the same types of things. Although Age 65 has changed things a bit, Continental has been having short (2-3) upgrade times for some time now. Part of why this is possible was retirements, but a big part of it was people choosing to stay senior in certain FO seats v. upgrading.

It used to be that they could bid back to a right seat after the upgrade if they wanted. Not sure if that is still true..

I believe it still has something like it, and I think they have a Position called Super FO (or Lance Capt) where they can fly in either seat. If a JR Capt wants seniority that month he can Bid an FO line but he gets paid FO rates, if he is a Senior (Super FO) he can fly a Capt trip or Line if he can hold it and gets paid Capt rates...............at least that is how is was explained to me.

But remember all FO's are typed before they come to SWA.
I can't imagine Upgrade training from FO to CAP at SWA take more than 2 weeks.

At FedEx we are just use to Long extrememly Long Training cycles.

Any SWA guys want to chime in here and correct any errors.?

Oh gosh, I never knew that.
