I thought it was 7 hours?

8 if you include the one hour show. 8 hours of duty time. They can't launch you in the first hour as that's your prelight/briefing time. Or, at least that's how it worked back in the hot PHX days.

Still the same.
Veteran Hot in all seats.
Yes, I'm junior
They did sweeps through 96-97 at UPS. With the bigger aircraft (757) was smarter to use overflight aircraft to drop in and recover volume or launch a dedicated Hot to recover.

If you have extra room on the aircraft, you are in the mix for a sweep. The best defense for not getting dropped into a city to recover extra freight is to get on the 11. The aircraft is too big for some ramps and takes too long to turn around. They call the 727 the slave ship for a reason....the unplanned sweep is just one of them.

Got ya, for a second I thought that maybe I went back 'home' (a.k.a. Red Roof) an hour too early when I picked up some Hot Stby open time...

Back in my youth as FDX ramper, we used to get planes fro all over the east coast for recovery, the favorites being RSW and JAX flights. The real confused guys were the one doing IND hub turns and we'd call in and IND only ad hoc. I do recall a time when an MT DC-10 was ferrying MEM-LAX to recover a broken plane, which miraculously was cured while the plane was enroute and was turned back to ATL to recover our newly broken DC-10. He got turned back somewhere around the New Mexico/Arizona border.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to delve into my current employers recovery plans, but the Hots and the partial load flights seems to be the most efficient ways of doing things. Though I don't get the impression that the Brown air operation has the flexibility of the Purple one... But I'm the FNG, what do I know?

I believe it's pretty rare to get "dropped" into a city to recover volume from a broken plane. I know it hasn't happened to me since the 727 days, wonder how often it happens to other brown folks? It just doesn't seem to be how UPS runs the system. They will lauch the hot to cover before they reroute another plane. I just don't see a lot of unplanned reroutes in our system.

Depends on volume. I have seen about 1-2 per year. Usually a 75 domestic being dropped in to recover a split volume. Example: Texas to SDF drop in JAN or TUL. (last 2 places I saw it happen) In JAN, the plane got fixed and blocked just as the 'drop in' 75 touched down, but needed fuel anyway due to the reroute.

One of the sweeps for FDX is the Duluth flight on the Bus - Sit at the airport for an hour at the luxury DLH ramp office - the best in our system - then you fly a big zig-zag across to South Bend,IN back to Springfield, MO then on to Memphis - what really sucks is when ATC asks if you want to go direct to MEM and you have to say no..... The flight miles are more than double the direct flight.. FUN!!
Oh and you leave DLH with about 5K in cargo so you've got plenty of room to add on freight.

What I like about those; your scheduled for an hour early stby period but even when they know they are going to divert you you sit around untill the scheduled take off time. What was the point of the STBY period? Used to happen all the time on the ORF-IND flight.
